蒙古位於亞洲內陸,北接俄羅斯,南接中國,國土大部分分布在蒙古高原之上。它沒有海岸,山脈、河流與水分也不以流向海洋作為唯一方向,而是在高原、盆地與廣大內陸之間,形成彼此不同的地景系統。
蒙古的地勢並不是一片平坦而連續的草原。
西部由蒙古阿爾泰山脈構成最鮮明的高山區域,冰雪峰頂、裸露岩壁與高山河谷,使地表呈現強烈的高度差異。蒙古最高點友誼峰位於西部阿爾泰山區,海拔四千三百七十四公尺;向東移動,杭愛山、肯特山與其間的高原和盆地,繼續構成蒙古中部與北部的地形骨架。
北部部分地區接近西伯利亞森林帶,山坡、河谷與湖泊周圍可以出現針葉林和森林草原。向中部與東部移動,森林逐漸稀疏,土地展開為更連續的草原;再向南,水分減少,植被轉為乾草原、半荒漠與戈壁。蒙古由北向南大致跨越森林草原、草原、半荒漠與荒漠等自然地帶,高山地區又因海拔差異形成自己的垂直分帶。
東部的地景較為低緩而開闊。
廣大的平原與草地讓水平線成為主要方向,地表的起伏不一定劇烈,距離卻被拉得很長。山體、河谷與聚落之間往往隔著大面積草原,使空間不是由密集物件填滿,而是由風、天空與可以持續延伸的視線共同構成。
南部則逐漸進入戈壁。
戈壁並不等於一片完全由沙丘組成的沙海。它同時包含礫石平原、乾燥盆地、低山、裸露岩體、稀疏草地與局部沙丘。不同地表彼此交錯,使戈壁既具有荒漠的乾燥,也保存草原、山地與季節性水分留下的痕跡。
在蒙古,氣候與地景之間的關係尤其直接。
深居內陸、距離海洋遙遠,使大部分區域降水有限,季節與日夜之間的溫度差異也十分明顯。水分的多寡,決定森林能否延伸、草原能維持到什麼程度,也影響土地何時轉向半荒漠與荒漠。看似遼闊而穩定的地表,實際上對降雪、乾旱、風與季節變化極為敏感。
這些自然地帶也並非沒有人的土地。
草原上的生活長期依賴牧草、水源與季節,人與牲畜的移動使場所不只由固定建築界定,也由行進路線、營地與反覆返回的土地構成。在較乾燥的區域,能夠支持不同季節放牧的範圍往往更加廣大,移動也成為回應環境變化的方法。
蒙古的地質背景同樣複雜。
它位於中亞造山帶的重要範圍內,不同地質單元在漫長時間裡經歷增生、碰撞、岩漿活動、變質作用與斷裂。這些過程形成多樣的岩體、礦帶與成礦環境,也使蒙古保存煤、銅、螢石、金、鐵、鎢、稀土與其他礦產資源。
因此,「蒙古礦物」並不存在一種可以概括全部的外觀。
礦物可能來自西部山地、北方岩體、中東部草原之下的礦帶,也可能來自南部戈壁的盆地與裸露岩層。相同的國家名稱,可以包含完全不同的母岩、形成條件、晶體結構與採集環境。
蒙古首先提供的是一片廣大的內陸高原。
真正的礦物風土,仍要繼續走進阿爾泰、杭愛、東部草原、戈壁,以及更具體的山體、礦區與採集地點,才能逐漸形成。
Mongolia is a landlocked country in the interior of Asia, bordered by Russia to the north and China to the south. Most of its territory lies within the Mongolian Plateau. Without a coastline, its mountains, rivers, and water systems do not all move toward a nearby sea, but form different landscapes across highlands, basins, and vast continental interiors.
Mongolia is not a single, continuous grassland.
The Mongolian Altai forms the country’s most prominent high-mountain region in the west. Snow-covered summits, exposed rock walls, and alpine valleys create dramatic changes in elevation. Mongolia’s highest point, Khüiten Peak, rises to 4,374 metres in the western Altai. Farther east, the Khangai and Khentii mountains, together with surrounding plateaus and basins, continue to shape the central and northern terrain.
Parts of northern Mongolia approach the southern edge of the Siberian forest zone, where coniferous woodland and forest steppe occur along mountain slopes, rivers, and lakes. Moving toward the center and east, forests become less continuous and the land opens into broader steppe. Farther south, declining moisture produces dry steppe, semi-desert, and desert environments. From north to south, Mongolia broadly crosses forest-steppe, steppe, semi-desert, and desert zones, while high mountains form their own vertical belts.
The eastern landscape is generally lower and more open.
Broad plains and grasslands make the horizon a dominant direction. Relief may appear gentle, yet distances become immense. Mountains, rivers, and settlements are often separated by large expanses of steppe, creating a space shaped not by dense objects, but by wind, sky, and the long movement of the gaze.
Toward the south, the land gradually enters the Gobi.
The Gobi is not a continuous sea of sand dunes. It also contains gravel plains, dry basins, low mountains, exposed rock, sparse grassland, and localized dune fields. These surfaces overlap, allowing the Gobi to combine extreme aridity with traces of steppe, mountain environments, and seasonal moisture.
In Mongolia, the relationship between climate and landscape is especially direct.
Its deep continental position and great distance from the ocean limit precipitation across much of the country, while seasonal and daily temperature changes can be severe. The availability of moisture determines how far forests extend, how grasslands are sustained, and where the land shifts toward semi-desert and desert. A surface that appears broad and stable may be highly sensitive to snowfall, drought, wind, and seasonal change.
These are not landscapes without people.
Life on the steppe has long depended upon pasture, water, and season. The movement of people and livestock means that place is not defined only by permanent buildings, but also by routes, camps, and land repeatedly returned to. In drier zones, the area required to support seasonal grazing becomes larger, and movement itself becomes a way of responding to environmental change.
Mongolia’s geological background is equally complex.
The country occupies an important part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, where different geological units have undergone accretion, collision, magmatism, metamorphism, and faulting over immense periods of time. These processes produced varied rock bodies, mineral belts, and ore-forming environments, as well as extensive resources of coal, copper, fluorite, gold, iron, tungsten, rare earth elements, and other minerals.
There is therefore no single appearance that can represent “minerals from Mongolia.”
A specimen may come from western mountains, northern rock bodies, mineral belts beneath the central or eastern steppe, or the basins and exposed formations of the southern Gobi. The same country name can contain entirely different host rocks, formation conditions, crystal structures, and collecting environments.
Mongolia first provides the range of an immense inland plateau.
Its mineral terroir only begins to emerge when the reading moves toward the Altai, the Khangai, the eastern steppe, the Gobi, and eventually to particular mountains, mines, and collecting sites.

Much of Mongolia is underlain by ancient continental crust dating back to the Precambrian and Paleozoic eras.
Long-term tectonic stability allowed granite intrusions, metamorphic rocks, and igneous formations to become widely exposed.
Combined with the country’s dry climate and sparse vegetation, many rock formations and mineral veins remain clearly visible at the surface.

在底域的風土閱讀裡,蒙古可以先從「開闊與轉換」開始。
開闊並不代表土地缺少內容。
當樹木、建築與密集植被減少,視線便能延伸得更遠。山脊、礫石、草地與地表起伏不再被遮蔽,風移動的方向、雲影落下的位置,以及季節改變後出現的色差,也更容易被看見。
蒙古的空間感,常先由水平線建立。
與高山地景強烈的向上方向不同,草原讓視線向外展開。單一物件在廣大背景中會顯得更加清楚,一座山、一片岩體或一顆被放置在空間中的晶體,也因此更容易呈現自身的輪廓與重量。
但蒙古並不只有水平的草原。
西部阿爾泰山脈帶來高度、冰雪與深切河谷;北部森林草原讓岩石與植物彼此覆蓋;中東部平原使距離不斷延伸;南部戈壁則讓乾燥、裸露與風化逐漸成為地表的主要語言。
因此,閱讀蒙古不能停留在「遼闊」二字。
真正重要的,是地景如何在移動之中改變。從森林走向草原,從草原走向半荒漠,從高山走向盆地,水分、植被與地表覆蓋逐漸減少,原本被遮蔽的岩石結構也可能重新顯露。
這種顯露容易使蒙古礦物被連結到原始、粗礪、荒涼與古老。
但這些仍然是觀看者從地景延伸出的印象,不是每一顆蒙古礦物固定擁有的性格。晶體仍然需要從實際可見的顏色、晶形、包裹體、母岩與風化狀態開始閱讀。
蒙古礦物也容易受到國家礦業形象影響。
當一片土地長期以煤、銅、螢石與其他資源被認識,礦物便可能首先被放進開採與經濟價值的語言裡。但收藏中的一顆晶體,仍然來自具體的岩層、礦脈與採集地點。資源名稱可以說明它被如何利用,卻不能取代它如何形成。
因此,當標本只能確認來自蒙古時,「蒙古」可以作為必要的國家資訊,卻不應被延伸成過度精確的產地敘事。
若能進一步確認省份、戈壁區域、礦山或更具體的採集地點,就應保留這些資訊;若來源仍然不清楚,也應停留在目前能被證明的範圍,而不是利用廣大的國家想像填補空缺。
在目前的底域閱讀中,我們將從戈壁|Gobi繼續進入蒙古。
戈壁不能代表蒙古全部。它是蒙古南部與中亞乾旱地帶的一個廣大地理範圍,也包含不同的盆地、山地、礫石平原與局部沙丘。進入戈壁之後,閱讀的重點將從國家的地形範圍,進一步轉向乾燥環境、遊牧生活、採集與市場印象如何共同塑造場所的性格。
閱讀蒙古,不是把晶體放進無人的荒野。
它更接近觀看土地如何在山地、草原與戈壁之間改變,人如何跟隨季節與水源移動,以及一顆礦物如何從廣大的地理名稱,逐漸回到具體的岩石與地方。
蒙古提供的是開闊的尺度。
真正的風土,則存在於每一次地表轉換、每一條移動路徑,以及每一個沒有被廣大國家名稱掩蓋的具體產地之中。

In DIYU’s reading of terroir, Mongolia can first be approached through openness and transition.
Openness does not mean that the land is empty.
When trees, buildings, and dense vegetation become less frequent, the gaze can travel farther. Ridges, gravel, grass, and subtle changes in the surface are less concealed. The direction of the wind, the movement of cloud shadows, and seasonal shifts in color also become easier to perceive.
Mongolian space is often first established by the horizon.
Unlike high-mountain landscapes that direct the gaze strongly upward, the steppe draws it outward. A single object becomes more distinct against such a broad background. A mountain, an exposed rock body, or a crystal placed within a room may therefore reveal its outline and weight with unusual clarity.
Yet Mongolia is not only a horizontal grassland.
The Altai brings elevation, snow, and deep valleys to the west. Northern forest-steppe allows vegetation and rock to overlap. The central and eastern plains extend distance across the horizon, while the southern Gobi increasingly makes dryness, exposure, and weathering the language of the surface.
To read Mongolia, therefore, cannot end with the word “vastness.”
What matters is how the landscape changes through movement. Forest shifts into steppe, steppe into semi-desert, mountains into basins. As moisture, vegetation, and surface cover decrease, structures once concealed within the land may become visible again.
This exposure often causes Mongolian minerals to be associated with ideas of rawness, solitude, antiquity, and wilderness.
Yet these remain impressions extended from the landscape. They are not fixed qualities carried by every specimen from Mongolia. A crystal must still be read through what is actually visible: color, form, inclusions, host rock, associations, and weathered surfaces.
Mongolian minerals are also influenced by the country’s mining image.
When a land is repeatedly understood through coal, copper, fluorite, and other resources, minerals may first enter a language of extraction and economic value. Yet a specimen in a collection still originates from a specific rock body, vein, and collecting place. The name of a resource can describe how it is used, but cannot replace the conditions under which it formed.
When Mongolia is the only confirmed origin of a specimen, the country name can provide necessary information, but it should not be expanded into an artificially precise locality narrative.
When a province, Gobi region, mine, or more exact collecting site can be confirmed, that information should remain visible. When the origin remains uncertain, the reading should stop at the boundary of what can be supported rather than filling the gap with the scale and imagery of the country.
Within the current DIYU Reading, the Gobi serves as the next entry into Mongolia.
The Gobi does not represent the entire country. It is an immense geographical region extending across southern Mongolia and the arid interior of Asia, containing different basins, mountain ranges, gravel plains, and localized dunes. Once the reading enters the Gobi, the emphasis shifts from national terrain toward the way aridity, pastoral life, collecting, and market imagery gradually shape the character of a place.
To read Mongolia is not to place a crystal within an uninhabited wilderness.
It is to observe how land changes between mountain, steppe, and Gobi; how people move in response to season and water; and how a mineral can return from a broad geographical label to a particular rock and locality.
Mongolia provides the scale of openness.
Terroir begins with every transition across the surface, every route of movement, and every specific origin that has not been concealed beneath the size of the country.
