Corundum

Corundum

導言

Introduction

Corundum is aluminium oxide, Al₂O₃, and belongs to the trigonal crystal system.

With a Mohs hardness of 9, it is one of the hardest common natural minerals. Chemically pure Corundum would be nearly colourless, yet natural crystals commonly contain trace elements, lattice defects, or inclusions that give rise to red, blue, yellow, green, purple, pink, orange, grey, and nearly black material.

Red gem-quality Corundum is known as Ruby. Gem-quality Corundum of other colours is generally classified within Sapphire, including blue and the many fancy colours.

These names are important in gemology and the trade, yet mineralogically they remain the same species: Corundum.

The underlying structure can remain the same while extremely small compositional differences change how the material is seen, named, and valued.

Within the DIYU Reading System, Corundum is read through:

trace.

Natural Reading

Corundum belongs to the trigonal crystal system and has the ideal chemical formula Al₂O₃. It has a Mohs hardness of 9 and a specific gravity of approximately 3.98–4.10, with lustre ranging from vitreous to adamantine. Crystals may be barrel-shaped, prismatic, bipyramidal, or thick tabular, while granular and massive material also occurs.

Corundum does not normally possess well-developed true cleavage, although parting may occur along structural weaknesses related to twinning, inclusions, or particular growth features. High hardness therefore does not mean that every direction is equally resistant to breakage.

One of its most remarkable characteristics is the sensitivity of colour to very small chemical differences.

Ideal Al₂O₃ does not require strong colour. When small amounts of trivalent chromium substitute for aluminium in the lattice, the red associated with Ruby can develop. Blue Sapphire is commonly coloured through electronic interactions involving iron and titanium. Other trace elements, defects, and chemical conditions can produce yellow, green, violet, pink, and other colours.

Ruby and Sapphire are therefore not separate mineral species.

They are different gemological identities arising within the same Corundum structure through colour, trace chemistry, and classification.

Some boundaries are consequently gemological rather than purely mineralogical. The transition between pink Sapphire and Ruby, for example, cannot be divided by a single chemical formula alone; hue, saturation, and trade conventions all influence classification.

Corundum may also preserve extremely fine inclusions.

Among the most famous are oriented needles of Rutile, commonly called silk in gemology. When these inclusions are arranged along crystallographic directions and the stone is cut as a properly oriented cabochon, reflected light can form asterism, producing Star Ruby or Star Sapphire. Other oriented inclusions may contribute to asterism in some corundum, so the phenomenon should not be reduced to Rutile alone in every specimen.

A population of needles too small to dominate individually

can collectively create the most visible feature of the gem.

Gem Corundum must also be read through the distinction between natural state and treatment.

Heat treatment is common in Ruby and Sapphire and may alter colour, saturation, and the appearance of inclusions. Diffusion treatments and fracture-filling techniques also exist. These are gemological conditions produced through human intervention and should not be confused with properties that every natural crystal originally possessed.

Synthetic Corundum requires another distinction.

Laboratory-grown Ruby and Sapphire may be produced by several crystal-growth methods. When the resulting material has the chemistry and crystal structure of Corundum, it is synthetic Corundum — not glass or Cubic Zirconia merely made to resemble the gem.

Its origin is artificial.

Its mineral structure is Corundum.

Reading Impressions

Colour can easily overshadow the mineral itself in Corundum.

When the material is red, we say Ruby.

When it is blue, we say Sapphire.

Pink, yellow, violet, orange, and other colours enter the language of fancy Sapphire.

One Al₂O₃ structure is therefore divided into many different human identities.

This division is not meaningless.

Colour matters in identification, value, cultural history, and visual experience.

Yet when these names are returned to the mineral scale, another relationship becomes visible:

the components responsible for red or blue may represent only a very small part of the whole crystal.

Most of the material still belongs to the same aluminium-oxide framework.

What changes the way we see it

may be present only in trace amounts.

This helps explain why Corundum has accumulated dramatically different symbolic traditions.

Ruby has historically been associated with blood, fire, power, passion, life, and status. Sapphire has often been associated with sky, loyalty, wisdom, purity, order, or the sacred.

These are cultural, religious, historical, and contemporary symbolic readings.

They are not mineralogical evidence that Ruby creates passion, Sapphire produces wisdom, or Corundum exerts a scientifically demonstrated energetic effect on the body.

What can be observed directly is simpler:

the same mineral structure,

through very small compositional differences,

develops very different colours,

and those colours in turn generate different human names and stories.

Corundum makes small amounts difficult to dismiss.

We often judge importance through proportion.

What occupies more seems more significant.

What occupies less is easily treated as impurity or background.

In Corundum, however,

trace elements are not merely background.

They can alter which wavelengths the crystal absorbs

and therefore change the colour that returns to the eye.

A small amount of chromium

can move an otherwise nearly colourless structure into the world of Ruby.

Relationships involving iron and titanium

can make the same fundamental structure appear blue.

The quantity may be very small,

while the visible consequence is enormous.

Inclusions offer another example.

A single fine Rutile needle may be only a minute trace inside the crystal.

But when many such needles align according to crystallographic directions,

light can reveal a star across the entire stone.

Corundum therefore leaves an important question of scale:

small describes quantity.

It does not necessarily describe effect.

Some components occupy very little space

while determining how an entire system is seen.

Some traces are extremely fine

yet make a direction visible.

Some differences are minor in chemical proportion

but large enough, in human classification, to separate the worlds of Ruby and Sapphire.

Through repeated observation, Corundum begins to suggest:

trace, colouration, difference, and amplification.

DIYU Reading

DIYU Reading

DIYU does not read Corundum as an instruction to pay attention to every small thing.

Not every minor change matters.

If every detail is enlarged to maximum importance,

scale itself disappears.

What Corundum offers is not anxiety,

but an asymmetry between proportion and influence.

Some things may be abundant

without significantly changing a system.

Others may be present only in trace amounts

and still redirect the entire result.

The more useful question is therefore not:

How much of it is there?

but:

What changes after it enters?

A small habit,

repeated every day, may gradually redirect an entire process.

A short rule

may determine a long sequence of later choices.

A material present in only a small proportion

may control the final texture of a work.

And some details,

although real,

remain background and do not need to become everything.

Corundum does not ask us to treat every small thing as important.

It leaves a more precise distinction:

Which traces are simply traces?

Which traces are producing colour?

Which apparently minor interventions

have already begun to alter the way the whole is seen?

Trace does not mean insignificant.

But it becomes meaningful as a key only when it changes the relationship.
