導言

Introduction

Gypsum is hydrated calcium sulfate, CaSO₄·2H₂O, and belongs to the monoclinic crystal system.

It is one of the most common sulfate minerals in nature and also one of the mineral materials most people have encountered indirectly in everyday life without necessarily recognising its mineral identity.

Transparent crystals can appear almost glass-like. Fibrous aggregates may show a silky lustre. Fine-grained massive material can be carved, while calcined gypsum becomes the basis of plasters, wallboard, and related building products.

What makes Gypsum especially worth reading, however, is not simply its softness or its white colour.

Water is written directly into its formula.

This water is not moisture sitting on the surface. It is part of the crystal structure. When heating removes part of that structural water, the mineral phase changes; when water is added again to the hemihydrate, gypsum crystals can form anew and the material sets.

Gypsum therefore offers a precise material relationship: return does not necessarily mean restoration of the original form.

Within the DIYU Reading System, Gypsum is read through: reconstitution.

Natural Reading

Desert Rose|

Gypsum has the ideal chemical formula CaSO₄·2H₂O and belongs to the monoclinic crystal system. It is an important member of the Gypsum Supergroup. Its Mohs hardness is 2, making it one of the index minerals of the Mohs scale. Its specific gravity is approximately 2.31–2.32, its streak is white, and its lustre may range from vitreous and pearly to silky or dull.

Gypsum has very good cleavage. Well-developed crystals are often tabular, lenticular, prismatic, or thickly bladed, and characteristic twins such as swallow-tail forms are common. Fine crystals may assemble into rosettes, while other occurrences may be fibrous, granular, or massive.

Its hardness is low enough that a fingernail can usually scratch it. This softness is a measurable physical property, not a statement that every specimen is loose or friable. Transparent crystals can still develop precise, coherent geometry.

One of the most common geological settings for Gypsum is the evaporite environment. As saline water containing calcium and sulfate becomes concentrated through evaporation, Gypsum may precipitate together with other evaporite minerals. It can also occur in hydrothermal veins, caves, and secondary environments, and may form through hydration of Anhydrite.

An important chemical detail is that the two H₂O units in its formula are structural water. In the ideal formula, water accounts for roughly 21% of the mineral by mass.

When Gypsum is heated, it can dehydrate in stages. Industrial calcination commonly removes much of its structural water to produce calcium sulfate hemihydrate, CaSO₄·0.5H₂O, corresponding compositionally to Bassanite. Further dehydration can produce more nearly anhydrous CaSO₄ phases such as Anhydrite.

The exact temperatures and products depend on heating rate, pressure, humidity, grain size, and processing conditions, so one fixed temperature should not be treated as universal.

The industrial relationship, however, is clear. When water is added to calcined hemihydrate, the material dissolves, nucleates, and forms new Gypsum crystals. Interlocking crystal growth causes plaster and related products to set and harden.

“Becoming Gypsum again” therefore does not mean that the original crystal has been rewound into existence.

The earlier crystal has already been transformed.

New Gypsum forms through another episode of crystallisation.

Several names used in collecting and trade also require separation.

Selenite usually refers to transparent, well-crystallised Gypsum. Despite the similarity of the words, Selenite is not chemically related to the element Selenium and should not be understood as selenium-bearing Gypsum.

Satin Spar commonly refers to parallel fibrous Gypsum with a silky lustre. Historically and in ornamental-stone usage, however, the term has also been applied to some fibrous Calcite or Aragonite, so the name alone is not sufficient for mineral identification.

Alabaster commonly refers, in a mineralogical context, to fine-grained massive Gypsum. In archaeology, sculpture, and stone history, however, alabaster may also refer to calcitic material. Context therefore matters.

Desert Rose describes a rosette-like habit, commonly produced by Gypsum crystals that incorporate sand. Baryte can also form comparable desert-rose aggregates, so the term describes appearance rather than a single mineral species.

Gypsum therefore separates several categories that are easily collapsed together: mineral species, crystal habit, historical name, commercial name, and processed material.

Reading Impressions

The first impression of Gypsum is often one of lightness.

Colourless or white.

Transparent.

Soft.

Even apparently fragile — easy to scratch and easy to split.

Transparent Selenite plates allow light to pass through, fibrous Satin Spar draws light into silky lines, while Alabaster turns the same basic chemistry into a dense, pale carving material.

One mineral can therefore span remarkably different visual identities: transparent crystal, fibrous aggregate, and opaque ornamental stone.

In contemporary crystal culture, Selenite is frequently associated symbolically with cleansing, clarity, the moon, calmness, protection, or the atmosphere of a space.

These belong to cultural, commercial, and personal interpretation rather than scientifically demonstrated mineralogical, medical, or psychological effects.

The name “Selenite” itself easily invites lunar and silvery associations, but naming history and symbolism do not demonstrate that the mineral produces a specific energetic effect.

Even without those claims, Gypsum leaves a remarkable perceptual fact:

a crystal that appears dry and solid contains water as part of its structure.

And when that water leaves, the material identity changes with it.

Softness is not the only important property of Gypsum.

Its integrity is already a relationship between a mineral framework and structural water.

Mineral Character

Gypsum is especially useful for distinguishing restoration from re-formation.

In everyday language, return is often imagined as reversal.

Add the water back.

Restore the earlier conditions.

Everything should therefore become what it was before.

The Gypsum–hemihydrate relationship is more complicated.

When an original Gypsum crystal loses structural water through calcination, its earlier crystal structure has already changed. When water is later added again, a new generation of Gypsum crystals forms. The bulk material can once again become Gypsum, but grain size, orientation, porosity, and morphology do not need to return to the state of the original natural crystal.

Chemical identity can move back toward a familiar phase without erasing history.

That distinction matters.

Becoming established again is not the same as never having changed.

The material can take water back in.

Grow Gypsum crystals again.

Set again.

Yet it has already passed through dehydration, grinding, mixing, or processing.

A new whole is established through new crystal relationships.

This is also why plaster can be cast into forms entirely unlike the original mineral body from which it was produced.

The same basic chemical relationship can support new geometry after a different history.

Through repeated observation, Gypsum begins to suggest: hydration, dehydration, rehydration, and reconstitution.

DIYU Reading

DIYU Reading

DIYU does not read Gypsum as a tool for “cleansing negative energy.”

Transparency, whiteness, and lunar imagery easily support that kind of cultural symbolism, but such effects are not demonstrated by mineralogy.

Gypsum offers a more concrete reading:

when something returns, it does not need to return as its previous version.

When water is added to calcium sulfate hemihydrate, Gypsum can form again.

But the process does not reconstruct the original natural crystal piece by piece.

It creates new crystals.

New junctions.

New pores.

A new whole.

This is very different from the everyday demand to “get back to normal.”

After a system has been interrupted, one of the most wasteful demands can be the insistence that everything must return exactly to its earlier state.

The workflow has changed.

The materials have changed.

People have changed.

The conditions have changed.

If every detail must be restored to the previous version, restarting may become more difficult than the interruption itself.

Gypsum therefore leaves another question:

not “How do I go back?”

but “Which necessary conditions are present again, and what new structure can now become stable?”

Water can return without the original crystal returning.

Yet once water returns, Gypsum can still form again.

This is not a failed restoration.

It is another kind of success:

allowing structure to become possible again without pretending that the intervening history never happened.

Gypsum leaves two final statements:

becoming established again does not require returning to the original form.

Reconstitution means accepting that history has occurred, then crystallising again under the conditions that exist now.
