美國|United States
Explore a mineral world shaped by continental scale, repeated mountain building, and local difference.
導言|Introduction
The mineral terroir of the United States cannot be defined by a single mountain system, climate, or mineral species.
From the ancient Appalachian Mountains in the east and the Ouachita Mountains in the south to the Rocky Mountains, the Basin and Range Province, and the Pacific margin in the west, the country crosses many geological ages, structural regions, and mineral systems. Specimens from these regions differ not only in species, but also in their formation, matrix, scale, and place within the mineral market. National geological mapping distinguishes major regions such as the Central Interior, the Appalachian and Ouachita systems, the Coastal Plain, and the Cordilleran mountain system, each with different rock types, ages, and deformation histories.
Arkansas is recognised for clear quartz and large crystal clusters. Herkimer in New York has developed a distinct identity around highly transparent double-terminated quartz. Colorado is associated with rhodochrosite, aquamarine, amazonite, and smoky quartz, while the pegmatites of Maine produce tourmaline, beryl, quartz, and feldspar. Benitoite from San Benito County, California, and the copper mineral systems of Arizona represent entirely different relationships between geology, colour, and crystal form.
“United States” is therefore not a single mineral character, but a national entrance that must continue into individual states, mountain regions, and mineral districts.
Geological Background
The continental United States is assembled from geological regions formed during different periods of Earth history.
The Appalachian Mountains in the east preserve records of ancient continental margins, marine sedimentation, volcanic activity, and plate collision. Many rocks first formed on ocean floors, island arcs, or continental margins before being metamorphosed, folded, and intruded during collisions between ancestral North America and Africa.
Arkansas quartz in the southern Ouachita Mountains represents a different and clearly readable orogenic and hydrothermal system. Silica-rich fluids moved through fractures in deformed sandstone, shale, and chert, depositing quartz in cavities and veins. Arkansas geological records place the major crystal deposits around Garland and Montgomery Counties and relate the principal mineralisation to the final stages of the Ouachita mountain-building cycle.
The “Herkimer diamonds” of New York are not diamonds, but quartz crystals known for their clarity, brilliance, and natural double termination. Their name comes from Herkimer County and has developed into a distinct identity within the mineral specimen market.
Mineral environments in the western United States are more varied. Colorado’s Sweet Home Mine is known for vivid red to pink rhodochrosite formed in veins and fractures within ancient granodiorite, sometimes associated with tetrahedrite, galena, chalcopyrite, and quartz. High-altitude pegmatites around Mount Antero may contain aquamarine together with feldspar, mica, garnet, and smoky quartz.
Many characteristic specimens from Maine occur in coarse-grained granitic pegmatites. Slow cooling and differentiation allowed large crystals of black or coloured tourmaline, beryl, quartz, garnet, and feldspar to develop. Open pockets within some pegmatites provided space for transparent tourmaline crystals and strong colour zoning.
The American Southwest presents another mineral language. Arizona’s major metallic mineral belt is dominated by porphyry copper systems related to granitic intrusion and metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids. Benitoite from San Benito County, California, occurs in veins within a brecciated blueschist zone enclosed by serpentinite and may be associated with neptunite, joaquinite, and pale natrolite matrix.
Together, these localities demonstrate that a national name can provide a geographical entrance, but cannot determine the character of a mineral specimen.

Time
The principal difficulty in reading American minerals is the scale of the country.
If only the name “United States” is retained, Arkansas quartz, Herkimer double-terminated crystals, Colorado rhodochrosite, Maine tourmaline, and Arizona copper minerals are compressed into one locality identity. Yet they do not share a single process of formation or a common visual character.
The national level can therefore function only as an entrance.
Reading must continue into the state, mountain system, rock body, and mineral district. It must ask whether a specimen formed within an orogenic fracture, a pegmatite pocket, a metallic hydrothermal vein, an oxidation zone, or a particular metamorphic or volcanic environment.
Each locality also preserves a different scale of time.
Arkansas quartz records fractures and hydrothermal activity near the end of a mountain-building cycle. Maine tourmaline records the cooling and differentiation of pegmatite. Colorado rhodochrosite preserves mineral fluids deposited within veins, while Arizona copper minerals reflect the combined action of magma, hydrothermal fluids, and later oxidation.
Within DIYU Reading, the United States represents:
Time
Time is more than geological age.
It is the sequence of geological events and the different mineral structures they leave in each place.
