導言|Introduction

西藏位於中國西南部,主要分布在青藏高原之上。這裡的平均海拔超過四千公尺,是地球上海拔最高、範圍最廣大的高原區域之一。高原的形成與長期的板塊碰撞、地殼增厚和山地抬升有關,也持續影響著亞洲的山脈、河流與氣候。

但西藏並不是一片平坦而均質的高地。

喜馬拉雅山構成南側最鮮明的山地邊界,岡底斯山與念青唐古拉山橫跨高原內部。北部與西部廣布高原面、湖盆、寬谷與山地;南部則有雅魯藏布江及其支流形成的河谷;向東移動,山脈與河流逐漸轉為南北方向,地表被切割成更深的高山峽谷。

西藏內部的氣候差異同樣明顯。

由東南向西北,環境大致從較溫暖、濕潤,逐步轉向寒冷與乾燥。藏東南的低海拔河谷可以出現森林、灌叢與較密集的水系;北部與西部則以高寒草原、荒漠、湖盆與裸露山地為主。高度、季風與地形共同控制水分如何進入,也使植物覆蓋與地表暴露呈現截然不同的狀態。

水也是理解西藏的重要線索。

雪山、冰川、湖泊與河流共同分布在高原之上。水從高處形成、匯聚,再沿著河谷切開山地。它有時停留在封閉湖盆,有時穿過峽谷流向更低的土地,使高原不只是遙遠而靜止的平面,也成為許多流動開始的地方。

在如此廣大的高原範圍內,岩石與礦物不可能擁有單一的形成環境。

山脈抬升、岩漿活動、變質作用、斷裂與侵蝕,在不同區域留下不同的岩層與礦物組合。來自西藏的晶體可能呈現透明、包裹體、共生、蝕刻、破損或重新生長,也可能因為採集位置與地表環境不同,保留完全不同的外觀。

因此,「西藏」首先是一個區域名稱,而不是一種礦物品種,也不是一種固定的晶體性格。

它所包含的,是高原、山系、河谷、湖盆與峽谷之間,持續發生的高度與環境轉換。

Tibet lies in southwestern China and occupies a large part of the Tibetan Plateau. With an average elevation of more than four thousand meters, it forms part of the highest and most extensive highland region on Earth. Its elevation developed through long-term continental collision, crustal thickening, and mountain uplift—processes that continue to influence the mountains, rivers, and climate of Asia.

Yet Tibet is not a flat or uniform highland.

The Himalayas form its most prominent southern mountain boundary, while the Gangdise and Nyenchen Tanglha ranges cross the interior of the plateau. Broad plateau surfaces, lake basins, valleys, and mountain terrain dominate much of the north and west. To the south, the Yarlung Tsangpo and its tributaries create extensive river valleys. Farther east, mountain ranges and rivers turn increasingly north–south, cutting the land into deep alpine gorges.

The climate also changes significantly within Tibet.

From southeast to northwest, conditions generally shift from relatively warm and humid to increasingly cold and dry. Lower valleys in southeastern Tibet can support forests, shrubs, and dense river systems, while the north and west are more strongly characterized by alpine grasslands, deserts, lake basins, and exposed mountain terrain. Elevation, monsoon influence, and topography determine how moisture enters the plateau and how much of the surface remains covered or exposed.

Water provides another way to understand the region.

Snow mountains, glaciers, lakes, and rivers coexist across the plateau. Water forms and gathers at high elevation before moving through valleys and cutting into mountain systems. In some places it remains within enclosed lake basins; elsewhere it passes through gorges toward lower lands. Tibet is therefore not simply a distant and motionless surface, but also a landscape from which movement begins.

Across such an immense highland region, rocks and minerals cannot come from one formation environment.

Mountain uplift, magmatism, metamorphism, faulting, and erosion have produced different rock units and mineral associations in different areas. Crystals from Tibet may contain inclusions, mineral associations, etched surfaces, fractures, or renewed growth, and specimens found in different terrain may preserve entirely different appearances.

“Tibet,” therefore, is first a regional name.

It is not a mineral variety, nor does it describe one fixed crystal character. It contains a continuing transition among plateaus, mountain systems, river valleys, lake basins, and deep gorges.

青藏高原的形成,源自約五千萬年前印度板塊持續向北推擠歐亞板塊所造成的造山運動。

板塊碰撞使地殼持續抬升,形成世界最高的高原與山脈,同時伴隨大量斷層、岩漿侵入、變質作用與熱液循環。

這些條件共同提供了石英等礦物生長所需的溫度、壓力與礦物流體,也使西藏成為世界知名的高山晶體產區。

The Tibetan Plateau formed through the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates, beginning roughly 50 million years ago.

This tectonic process uplifted the Earth’s crust to create the world’s highest plateau while generating faults, magmatic intrusions, metamorphism, and hydrothermal circulation.

Together, these geological conditions provided the heat, pressure, and mineral-rich fluids necessary for crystal growth, making Tibet one of the world’s most remarkable alpine mineral regions.

DIYU 閱讀|DIYU Reading

在底域的風土閱讀裡,閱讀西藏,可以先從高度開始,但不能停留在高度。

高海拔改變了空氣、水分、溫度與距離,也改變人如何移動、生活與觀看土地。當視野跨過廣大的高原面,山體與天空占據了更大的比例,岩石、河谷與地表線條也容易顯得更加清楚。

高度因此帶來一種尺度感。

人面對山脈、冰川與遠方時,容易感受到自身的微小,也容易把晶體與純淨、遙遠、艱難取得或精神性連結。這些感受可以成為閱讀的一部分,但它們並不是晶體自身固定攜帶的意義,而是地景、文化與市場長期共同形成的想像。

西藏也經常被描述為空曠與寂靜。

但高原並不是空白。湖泊保存水的停留,河谷形成移動的路徑,草原、城鎮、牧地與寺院則顯示,人與土地早已建立漫長而複雜的關係。即使在最裸露的地表,風、凍融、水流與溫差仍持續改變岩石的表面。

因此,西藏的風土不能只用雪白或純淨理解。

西部與北部的乾燥湖盆,帶來開闊、暴露與風化;藏南河谷讓水、土地與人的生活聚集;藏東高山峽谷則呈現河流切割、垂直落差與更密集的環境變化。同一片高原,同時容納了寬廣與深切、乾燥與濕潤、裸露與覆蓋。

這些差異也提醒我們,「藏晶」只能作為閱讀的起點。

當一顆晶體目前只能確認來自西藏,這個名稱提供了必要的區域方向;若能進一步確認阿里、山南、日喀則或更具體的採集地點,便應保留更精確的資訊。產地越清楚,晶體與土地之間的關係才越不容易被模糊的市場名稱取代。

在目前的底域閱讀中,我們將從阿里,繼續進入西藏西部。

阿里內部包含高原湖盆、寬谷、山地與高山峽谷,並由南向北呈現不同的地形組合。乾燥使部分高原面保存得更加完整,也使岩石、侵蝕與地表結構更直接地顯露。阿里不能代表整個西藏,卻能讓高原西部的高度、距離與風化,逐漸集中為一個可以被閱讀的場所。

閱讀西藏,不是把一顆晶體放進遙遠而神聖的想像。

它更接近重新觀看高度如何改變土地,水如何穿過山脈,風與寒冷如何留下痕跡,以及人在如此巨大的尺度之中,如何持續為地方命名、生活並建立記憶。

西藏提供的是高原的範圍。

真正的風土,則存在於每一座山、每一條河谷,以及每一個不能被「高原」二字完全概括的具體地方。

In DIYU’s reading of terroir, Tibet can first be approached through elevation—but the reading cannot end there.

High altitude changes air, moisture, temperature, and distance. It also changes how people move through, inhabit, and observe the land. Across broad plateau surfaces, mountains and sky occupy a larger proportion of the view, while rock, valleys, and surface lines often appear with greater clarity.

Elevation therefore creates a powerful sense of scale.

When facing mountains, glaciers, and distant horizons, people become more conscious of their own smallness. Crystals from such regions are easily associated with purity, remoteness, difficult access, or spirituality. These associations may form part of the reading, but they are not fixed meanings carried by the crystals themselves. They are shaped by landscape, culture, and the history of the mineral market.

Tibet is also frequently imagined as empty and silent.

Yet the plateau is not blank. Lakes preserve water, valleys create routes of movement, and grasslands, settlements, pastoral land, and monasteries reveal a long relationship between people and place. Even on the most exposed surfaces, wind, freezing and thawing, flowing water, and temperature continue to alter the rock.

Tibetan terroir therefore cannot be reduced to whiteness or purity.

The dry lake basins of the west and north create openness, exposure, and weathering. Southern river valleys bring water, land, and human life together. The deep gorges of eastern Tibet introduce strong vertical differences and more concentrated environmental change. The same plateau contains breadth and incision, dryness and moisture, exposure and cover.

These contrasts also remind us that the label “Tibetan crystal” can only be a point of departure.

When Tibet is the most precise origin currently available, the name provides a necessary regional direction. When Ngari, Shannan, Shigatse, or a more specific locality can be confirmed, that information should be preserved. The clearer the locality, the less likely the relationship between mineral and land will be replaced by a broad market label.

Within the current DIYU Reading, Ngari serves as the next entry into western Tibet.

Ngari includes plateau lake basins, broad valleys, mountain terrain, and high alpine gorges, with different landforms appearing from south to north. Its aridity allows portions of the plateau surface to remain relatively intact and makes erosion, exposed rock, and land structure more directly visible. Ngari cannot represent Tibet as a whole, but it allows the elevation, distance, and weathering of the western plateau to become concentrated within a particular place.

To read Tibet is not to place a crystal within an image of a distant and sacred land.

It is to observe how elevation changes the surface, how water passes through mountains, how wind and cold leave their traces, and how people continue to name, inhabit, and remember places within such an immense scale.

Tibet provides the range of the plateau.

Terroir begins within each mountain, each valley, and each particular place that cannot be fully contained by the word “highland.”
