Evidence
—
When looking at a mineral specimen, we naturally want to ask:
What is it?
Where did it come from?
Is it natural?
Has it been treated?
These questions may appear simple, but answering them requires different levels of evidence.
Some information can be approached through crystal form, physical properties, and mineral associations. Other conclusions require instrumental analysis, laboratory testing, or reliable provenance records. And some questions can only remain reasonable hypotheses.
Within DIYU Reading System, identification is not about forcing every specimen to produce a definitive answer.
What matters is knowing:
how far the available evidence actually allows us to go.
Observation Is Not Confirmation
—
Photographs and visual observation can provide many useful clues.
Crystal form, colour, transparency, lustre, cleavage, fracture, inclusions, matrix, and associated minerals may all help narrow the possibilities.
But there is still a distance between “it looks like” and “it has been confirmed.”
For example:
A green crystal is not automatically emerald.
A green phantom cannot always be identified as chlorite from colour alone.
A black shale matrix does not by itself prove that a specimen came from one specific Colombian locality.
Appearance is part of the evidence.
It is not the whole of it.
Mineral Identification
• Raman spectroscopy|
• X-ray diffraction|X
• Chemical analysis|
—
Mineral identification compares observable features with the known physical, chemical, and crystallographic properties of a mineral.
In straightforward cases, crystal form, hardness, streak, cleavage, specific gravity, and other basic properties may already provide strong evidence.
Many minerals, however, can resemble one another.
When greater certainty is required, testing may include:
• Refractive index and gemological testing
• Microscopic examination
• Raman spectroscopy
• X-ray diffraction
• Chemical analysis
• Other laboratory methods selected for the specific question
Different analytical tools answer different questions.
The important issue is therefore not simply whether an instrument was used, but whether the chosen method is capable of answering the question being asked.
Provenance Evidence
—
Provenance is one of the easiest forms of mineral information to misunderstand.
A specimen may have a highly characteristic appearance, but appearance alone usually provides only a locality clue rather than complete proof of origin.
Stronger provenance evidence may include:
• Original collecting records
• Information from miners or collectors
• Traceable supply chains
• Historic labels and collection records
• Characteristic mineral assemblages and geological features
• Laboratory analysis of inclusions, trace elements, or other features
The more independent lines of evidence agree with one another, the stronger the provenance attribution generally becomes.
Sometimes all we know is:
“Colombia.”
Sometimes the evidence reaches:
“Boyacá.”
And sometimes it can be narrowed further to:
“Peñas Blancas.”
None of these answers is inherently better.
They simply represent different levels of evidential precision.
DIYU therefore follows a simple principle:
record the locality only as precisely as the evidence allows.
Trade Names and Formal Names
New Age
—
The mineral market contains many useful and historically established names.
Golden Lemurian, Silver Light Quartz, Green Phantom, Laser Wand, Cathedral Quartz, and Devic Temple are all examples of terms used to describe particular appearances, structures, or cultural categories.
But these names do not all belong to mineralogy.
Some are:
formal mineral names.
Some are:
mineral variety names.
Some are:
trade or collector terms.
Others belong to:
New Age or Master Crystal classification systems.
These languages can coexist.
The question is not which vocabulary is the only one that may be used.
The important thing is knowing which language we are speaking.
DIYU Reading
—
Within DIYU Reading System, uncertainty is not treated as a flaw that must be hidden.
Minerals reach us only after being collected, traded, relabelled, renamed, and sometimes reclassified.
Some specimens retain complete provenance records.
Some preserve only an old label.
Some can be traced only to a country.
And some information may be revised when stronger evidence appears.
Reading is therefore not an attempt to create answers that can never change.
It is a way of allowing every statement to stop exactly where the available evidence stops.
We can observe.
We can compare.
We can propose possibilities.
And we can leave questions open.
Accuracy does not mean knowing everything.
Sometimes the most accurate position is simply knowing clearly:
what we know,
what we infer,
and what we do not yet know.
