Truthmaker theory asks whether truths require something in reality in virtue of which they are true. A truthmaker is therefore not merely evidence for a proposition but an ontological feature that is supposed to make or ground its truth.

不同 truthmaker theories 並不都要求每個真理都有 truthmaker；negative、modal、mathematical truths 等案例尤其有爭議。
