Bowen’s reaction series describes a common order in which silicate minerals crystallize as magma cools: a continuous branch changes plagioclase from Ca-rich toward Na-rich compositions, while a discontinuous branch progresses through minerals such as olivine, pyroxene, amphibole, and biotite. Removing early crystals can also change the composition of the remaining melt.
