Analcime
導言
Introduction
Analcime is a hydrated sodium aluminosilicate mineral with the ideal formula Na(AlSi₂O₆)·H₂O and belongs to the Zeolite Group.
It commonly appears as white or colourless, sharply bounded polyhedral crystals. Its best-known habit is the {211} trapezohedron, which gives many specimens an almost isometric, carefully constructed appearance.
What makes Analcime especially interesting, however, lies in that word “almost.”
Modern structural descriptions show that natural Analcime can express different degrees of symmetry depending on Si–Al ordering within the framework and on very slight structural distortion. In hand specimen, the crystals may still look strongly pseudocubic, so the order perceived by the eye does not always reproduce every detail present at the atomic scale.
This is not simply a problem of classification. It is a useful reminder that “looking the same” in nature may sometimes be an approximation created by scale.
Within the DIYU Reading System, Analcime is read through “approximation.”

Natural Reading
Analcime has the ideal formula Na(AlSi₂O₆)·H₂O and is a framework silicate of the Zeolite Group. Its SiO₄ and AlO₄ tetrahedra connect into a three-dimensional framework containing spaces that accommodate water and extra-framework cations. Data compiled by the International Zeolite Association also show that natural Analcime varies in Na, Al, Si, and water content. The ideal formula therefore describes the structural core rather than an exact composition that every natural specimen must match.
Its Mohs hardness is about 5–5.5 and its specific gravity about 2.24–2.29. Lustre is generally vitreous; crystals range from transparent to translucent and are commonly colourless, white, or grey, with pink, green, and yellow also known. Cleavage is poor, fracture may be uneven to subconchoidal, and the mineral is brittle.
Crystal form is one of Analcime’s strongest visual identifiers. Well-developed crystals commonly form trapezohedra and may combine these with cubic forms; some crystals reach substantial size. Because the resulting morphology appears highly isometric, Analcime was long described simply as cubic or isometric.
An important crystallographic qualification is needed, however.
The older Handbook of Mineralogy already noted cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, and monoclinic pseudocubic variants related to ordering. The current Mindat structural entry gives a triclinic P1 reference while also explaining that natural Analcime can occur in several lower-symmetry forms. The topology of the aluminosilicate framework remains essentially the same; the reduction in symmetry reflects subtle Si–Al ordering and slight distortion of that framework. Describing every specimen as strictly cubic is therefore too simple, but treating each small symmetry variation as a separate mineral species would be equally misleading.
This combination — an externally high-symmetry appearance with subtle internal departures from it — is one of Analcime’s most distinctive mineralogical qualities.
Geologically, Analcime occurs in vesicles, fractures, and groundmass of basalt and other relatively silica-poor igneous rocks, where it may form through late-stage hydrothermal processes or low-temperature alteration of volcanic glass. It also occurs in volcaniclastic sediments, saline-alkaline lake settings, and as an authigenic mineral during diagenesis in sandstone and siltstone. One mineral species can therefore appear across volcanic cavities, hydrothermal systems, and sedimentary alteration environments.
In basalt cavities it may occur with Natrolite, Stilbite, Heulandite, Calcite, Quartz, Prehnite, and other zeolites. U.S. Geological Survey work on basaltic pillow lavas in Oregon documented Analcime together with Natrolite and Stilbite and identified alteration of basaltic glass as an important source process in the development of the zeolite assemblage.
To read Analcime, then, is to look beyond the white polyhedron.
What matters is how an open three-dimensional framework can accommodate water and compositional variation while allowing small changes in symmetry without losing its basic structural topology.
Reading Impressions
The first impression of Analcime is often one of visual cleanliness.
White or transparent crystals emerge from the host rock as sharply joined polyhedra. Unlike Natrolite, which draws the eye into long needles, or Stilbite, which opens into fans, Analcime tends to gather itself into a compact volume.
In mineral collecting, it is therefore often remembered through the sense of a “complete form.”
That completeness can be misleading if it is taken to mean that the internal structure must possess exactly the same high symmetry as the external outline. Mineralogy offers a more interesting picture: a hand specimen may display a higher average symmetry than the atomic arrangement resolved at a smaller scale.
The name Analcime also carries a history that is easy to misread. It derives from a Greek word meaning “weak,” referring to the relatively weak electrostatic charge observed when the mineral was heated or rubbed. This “weakness” belongs to the history of a physical observation. It is not a judgement about the character of the crystal, nor a measure of spiritual or energetic strength.
Contemporary crystal culture may build symbolic associations from Analcime’s white colour, transparency, geometric form, or zeolitic framework. Such associations can be discussed as cultural or personal readings, but they are not scientific evidence that Analcime produces specific psychological, physiological, or energetic effects.
What is more useful to preserve is the quiet discrepancy between appearance and structure:
the eye sees an almost symmetrical form,
while the framework may retain many small, directional differences.
Mineral Character
The character of Analcime is not “perfection.”
It is closer to “close enough to cohere.”
At the scale of the eye, a crystal can appear remarkably regular. Faces answer one another, the outline approaches high symmetry, and several directions seem to repeat according to one rule.
At a smaller scale, ordering begins to matter.
Different positions of Si and Al within the framework can be accompanied by minute distortion, and differently oriented structural domains need not be perfectly equivalent. These differences may be too small to alter the overall appearance of a hand specimen, yet large enough to lower the symmetry described by crystallography.
Analcime therefore offers an unusual way of looking:
the whole can remain coherent without every local part being identical.
Approximation is not carelessness.
An average is not necessarily false.
Sometimes what we recognise as a “form” is precisely the larger-scale result of many small differences coexisting within one structure.
Useful words for Analcime are:
approximation, ordering, framework, deviation, whole.
DIYU Reading
DIYU Reading
DIYU does not read Analcime as a lesson in perfect symmetry.
Analcime itself makes the word “perfect” less necessary.
A crystal may look almost isometric.
A more detailed structural analysis may show that not every direction is exactly equivalent.
These statements do not contradict one another.
They operate at different scales of observation.
We often mistake precision for sameness. If a deviation appears, we assume the structure has failed. If an answer requires words such as “approximately,” “nearly,” or “depending on conditions,” we may feel that the answer has become less complete.
Analcime offers another natural image.
Its basic framework can remain.
Local ordering can change.
Symmetry can be reduced.
And the crystal can still preserve a highly recognisable whole.
So the word retained here is not “balance,” but “approximation.”
Approximation is not the abandonment of accuracy.
Sometimes acknowledging error, scale, and local difference is the only way to become more accurate.
To read Analcime is therefore not to ask:
“How can every part become exactly the same?”
but:
“Which differences change the whole, and which differences can the whole contain?”
A structure does not always remain coherent because every part is identical.
Sometimes it remains coherent because it knows what must stay constant, and where a little difference can remain.
