Heulandite
導言
Introduction
Heulandite is a subgroup of hydrated aluminosilicate minerals within the zeolite group. It commonly forms thin tabular, bladed, or slightly wedge-shaped crystals in cavities and fractures of basaltic rocks, often growing with other zeolites, calcite, apophyllite, or quartz. Crystals may be colourless or white, but can also appear pink, orange, yellow, brown, or green. On its perfect cleavage, the lustre often becomes distinctly pearly.
In modern mineral nomenclature, “Heulandite” requires one additional level of precision. It is not a single compositionally unrestricted species name, but a subgroup name. Once the dominant extra-framework cation is established, species are named Heulandite-Ca, Heulandite-Na, Heulandite-K, Heulandite-Sr, or Heulandite-Ba. When the chemistry has not been determined well enough to establish cation dominance, Heulandite is more appropriately used at the subgroup level.
This makes Heulandite a useful example of why mineral identification cannot rely on appearance alone. Similar tabular crystals may belong to different species depending on framework chemistry and extra-framework cations. Its close relationship with Clinoptilolite also requires chemical information for reliable distinction.
Within the DIYU Reading System, Heulandite is read through “accommodation”: how a structure can preserve its framework while still containing space for water and exchangeable cations.

Natural Reading
Heulandite belongs to the zeolite group, a family of hydrated framework silicates built from an open three-dimensional aluminosilicate network. Silicon-oxygen and aluminium-oxygen tetrahedra connect to form the framework. When aluminium substitutes for part of the silicon, the framework acquires a negative charge that is balanced by extra-framework cations such as sodium, calcium, potassium, strontium, or barium. Water molecules also occupy these extra-framework spaces. The resulting channels and cavities allow zeolites, under appropriate conditions, to dehydrate and rehydrate and to participate in cation exchange.
The current Heulandite Subgroup contains five species: Heulandite-Ca, Heulandite-Na, Heulandite-K, Heulandite-Sr, and Heulandite-Ba. The subgroup can be described broadly as a hydrated aluminosilicate framework containing Na, Ca, K and related extra-framework cations, but species-level naming depends on which cation is dominant. For the common Heulandite-Ca, a representative formula is approximately (Ca,Na)₅(Si₂₇Al₉)O₇₂·26H₂O. Different references normalize zeolite formulae differently, so atom totals and the stated number of water molecules may be written at another scale without representing a different basic mineral structure.
Heulandite-Ca is monoclinic, with a Mohs hardness of about 3.5–4 and a specific gravity of roughly 2.1–2.2. It has perfect cleavage on {010} and is brittle. Crystals are commonly tabular on {010}; when they broaden toward the centre and narrow toward the ends, collectors often describe the outline as “coffin-shaped.” Heulandite may also occur in clusters, granular aggregates, or massive material. The lustre is generally vitreous, becoming pearly on the perfect cleavage.
The relationship between Heulandite and Clinoptilolite is especially important. Both share the same HEU framework topology, and their compositions form a continuous range. Under the IMA-recommended zeolite nomenclature, the Heulandite series is defined by a framework Si:Al ratio below 4.0, whereas Clinoptilolite has Si:Al at or above 4.0. The value of 4.0 is a conventional nomenclatural boundary retained for historical and practical reasons; it does not represent an abrupt structural break in nature. Thermal stability was once used as an identification aid, but it is not the formal basis of the modern definition.
A pink, tabular zeolite with pearly cleavage therefore cannot be assigned confidently to a particular Heulandite species by appearance alone, nor can Clinoptilolite be reliably excluded on macroscopic appearance. Careful identification generally requires chemical analysis together with X-ray diffraction.
Geologically, Heulandite commonly forms in vesicles, fractures, and amygdaloidal cavities in volcanic rocks. It can also develop when volcanic glass and tuff undergo low-temperature water-rock reaction, diagenetic alteration, or hydrothermal alteration. The Handbook of Mineralogy records Heulandite from basalt cavities, highly weathered andesite and diabase, and as a devitrification product of volcanic glasses and tuffs. USGS work on the Siletz River Volcanics in Oregon likewise documents low-temperature zeolite assemblages including stilbite–heulandite–chabazite.
Heulandite is therefore more than a decorative cavity mineral. It can be read as a mineral record of long interaction between volcanic material and water: original glass and rock components are redistributed, a new hydrated framework grows into available space, and part of the fluid’s cation inventory becomes incorporated into that structure.
Reading Impressions
The name Heulandite was introduced by Henry James Brooke in 1822 in honour of the mineral collector and dealer John Henry Heuland. The historical name was later reorganized through modern zeolite nomenclature into the present species system using the suffixes -Ca, -Na, -K, -Sr, and -Ba.
In the specimen market, Heulandite is often recognized through pale pink, salmon, or white tabular crystal clusters. The Deccan basalt provinces of Maharashtra, India, have long produced large and well-developed Heulandite and associated zeolite specimens, making the combination of soft colour, thin tabular habit, and dark volcanic matrix familiar within collecting culture. Neither colour nor locality, however, defines the species. Members of the subgroup occur in multiple colours, and other zeolites can form similarly pale tabular crystals.
The Chinese name 片沸石 can also encourage an easy misunderstanding: that Heulandite is structurally a sheet silicate, perhaps comparable to mica. It is not. Heulandite is a framework silicate with a three-dimensional zeolite network. The impression of “sheets” belongs more to crystal habit and perfect cleavage than to its silicate classification.
Modern crystal culture sometimes associates Heulandite with calmness, emotional release, spiritual receptivity, dreams, or “high frequency.” These are contemporary symbolic and personal-use interpretations, not demonstrated mineralogical or medical effects. If such cultural readings are discussed, they should remain clearly identified as cultural language rather than being retroactively justified by zeolite channels, hydration, or ion-exchange properties.
Mineral Character
One of the most interesting qualities of Heulandite is that it presents “thinness” and “framework” at the same time.
From the outside, a well-developed crystal often appears plate-like: broad in area, relatively thin, sharply bounded, and capable of separating along its perfect cleavage. Pearly reflections move across the cleavage surface, giving the crystal a visually lighter and softer presence than many dense minerals.
But stopping at the image of a “sheet” would misread its internal structure. Heulandite is not held together as a stack of easily separated silicate layers. Its tetrahedra form a three-dimensional framework, and what makes that framework distinctive is that it does not fill every part of the volume. Channels contain water and extra-framework cations, and some of those cations can be exchanged under appropriate conditions.
Heulandite is therefore not a simple opposition between solid and empty.
Space is part of the stable structure itself.
The framework preserves relationships; the channels permit certain occupants to remain, leave, or be replaced. This is not structural looseness and it is not an absence of boundaries. It is a way of locating variability inside an ordered framework.
Its continuous chemical relationship with Clinoptilolite adds another layer. Boundaries in natural classification are sometimes drawn because they help us describe a continuum. The Si:Al = 4.0 boundary is useful for nomenclature, but crystal chemistry does not abruptly stop being continuous at that number.
After repeated observation, Heulandite therefore leaves behind terms closer to its material reality than “softness” or “healing”: framework, channel, exchange, boundary, and continuity.
DIYU Reading
DIYU Reading
DIYU’s reading of Heulandite begins with a practical structural fact:
Empty space does not necessarily mean something is missing.
In a zeolite framework, channels are not holes created by damage; they are part of the structure. Water molecules and extra-framework cations can occupy them. Under appropriate conditions, some water can leave and return, and some cations can be exchanged, while the basic framework topology remains.
It would be easy to romanticize this into claims about “absorbing negative energy” or “exchanging energy.” DIYU does not make that inference. Dehydration, rehydration, and cation exchange are material and chemical phenomena. They do not demonstrate that a crystal removes emotions, illness, or an undefined form of energy from a person.
Once the scientific fact is left where it belongs, it can still support a cleaner personal reading:
Some forms of stability do not require every position to be filled.
Some forms of completeness do not require all change to be refused.
The more useful distinction may be between what constitutes the framework and what is temporarily held within it.
If everything that enters a life is treated as part of its permanent structure, every departure can feel like collapse. But when we can distinguish the relationships that provide the framework from the contents that may move, exchange, or be renewed, change does not always require rebuilding everything.
Heulandite also offers a second reminder: a classification boundary can be useful without implying that nature truly breaks at that line. Heulandite and Clinoptilolite share the same framework type and pass through a continuous chemical range. A ratio is used to establish a naming boundary because it improves description, not because the two sides become unrelated.
DIYU therefore closes its reading of Heulandite with “Accommodation.”
Not accepting everything.
Not filling every available space.
But keeping the framework clear enough that change has somewhere to occur.
