導言

Introduction

Anglesite is a lead sulfate mineral with the ideal formula PbSO₄. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and belongs to the Baryte Group.

It may form transparent to translucent crystals with remarkably bright surfaces, ranging from adamantine and vitreous to resinous lustre. Colour is variable: colourless and white are common, while grey, yellow, green, and blue tones also occur.

What makes Anglesite especially useful to read, however, is not colour alone. It commonly appears after another lead mineral has begun to change. In the oxidized zone of a lead deposit, Galena (PbS) may be altered by oxygen-bearing waters and changing chemical conditions, allowing Anglesite to form as a secondary mineral.

An Anglesite specimen may therefore look like a newly grown crystal, or it may preserve something of an older mineral’s geometry. The material has changed, yet the form may still remember where it came from.

Within the DIYU Reading System, Anglesite is read through: replacement.

Anglesite has the ideal formula PbSO₄ and crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. It belongs to the Baryte Group together with Baryte (BaSO₄) and Celestine (SrSO₄), minerals that share closely related structures. Anglesite is neither another name for Galena nor simply a “lead-bearing gypsum”; it is a distinct, valid mineral species.

Its Mohs hardness is approximately 2.5–3, making it relatively soft and brittle, while its specific gravity is unusually high at about 6.37–6.39. This combination — soft but distinctly heavy — is one of its useful physical clues. Cleavage is good on {001}, with weaker cleavage in other directions, and fracture may be conchoidal.

Crystal habit is highly variable. Anglesite may form prismatic, tabular, nearly equant, or bipyramidal crystals, as well as granular, nodular, stalactitic, or massive aggregates. Some faces are distinctly striated. Transparent, colourless crystals with adamantine lustre can be visually striking, but colour alone is not diagnostic.

Its classic geological setting is the oxidized zone of lead deposits. As primary Galena is weathered and oxidized near the surface, lead can be redistributed into secondary minerals; where sulfate is available, PbSO₄ may form. Anglesite is therefore commonly associated with residual Galena, Cerussite, Pyromorphite, Vanadinite, Wulfenite, Mimetite, and other oxidation-zone minerals.

This alteration may preserve an earlier external form. At some localities, Anglesite occurs as a pseudomorph after Galena: the material has changed from PbS to PbSO₄ while the outward cubic geometry inherited from Galena remains. Massive material may also form in bands around a core of incompletely altered Galena.

Anglesite contains lead. For collectors, the practical issue is not to imagine an intact crystal as actively releasing danger, but to prevent lead-bearing material from entering the body. Avoid grinding, cutting, or producing dust, keep specimens away from the mouth and food-contact surfaces, and clean hands after handling. This is basic materials safety, not part of the mineral’s symbolic meaning.

Reading Impressions

Anglesite often carries a visual contradiction.

It can be exceptionally bright. Transparent crystals may approach a gem-like adamantine lustre, yet the moment a specimen is lifted, its weight makes clear that this is not a light material. It is relatively soft and brittle, but remarkably dense.

Its name also preserves a specific geographical history. In 1783, William Withering described material from the Parys Mine on the island of Anglesey, Wales, as “vitriol of lead.” In 1832, François Sulpice Beudant named it anglésine after that locality; the modern name Anglesite developed from this usage. The name refers to a real place, not to a colour or claimed effect.

In mineral collecting, transparent colourless, yellow, blue-green, or complexly faceted Anglesite crystals may be prized for their lustre and form. These are judgments of specimen aesthetics, rarity, and market culture, separate from the mineralogical definition of PbSO₄.

Modern crystal culture may also extend transparency, brightness, or the idea of “transformation” into symbols of purification, renewal, or release. These are cultural or personal readings, not scientifically demonstrated mineral functions. For DIYU, the more useful starting point is observable: a new mineral can form through the alteration of an older one.

Mineral Character

What is most interesting about Anglesite is not only what something has “become,” but what remains visible after change.

As Galena is progressively oxidized, its original PbS composition is no longer maintained. Changes involving sulfur, oxygen, carbonate, and surrounding fluids can redistribute lead into different secondary minerals. Anglesite is one possible result within this broader oxidation-zone chemistry.

Pseudomorphs make part of this process visible to the eye.

An outer form can remain.

The internal material can change.

A cube may still look like the earlier cube, without being composed of the same substance it once was.

Anglesite therefore carries a more precise character than a general idea of “transformation.” It reminds us that outward form, composition, formation history, and present mineral identity are different layers of description.

Through repeated observation, Anglesite begins to suggest: replacement, residue, inheritance, and recognition.

DIYU Reading

DIYU Reading

DIYU does not read Anglesite as a message that “transformation makes us better.”

Mineral reactions contain no such value judgment.

Galena changes in an oxidation zone because environmental conditions and chemical reactions alter which materials can remain stable. The formation of Anglesite does not mean that the previous state was inferior, or that the later state is somehow higher.

The more useful observation is different:

Change does not always occur at every level at the same time.

Composition may change first.

External form may remain for a while.

A structure can even preserve the outline of an earlier material, allowing a new substance to retain visible evidence of what occupied that form before it.

So “looking unchanged” is not the same as being unchanged.

And a change in material does not require every trace of the earlier state to disappear.

To read Anglesite is to separate the layers of change: What has been replaced? What has been preserved? What has only inherited an outer form while becoming different within?

Some changes do not begin by demolishing the entire existing shape.

They may begin internally, occupying familiar positions little by little with a different material that can now exist there.
