Epidote
導言
Introduction
Epidote is a calcium aluminium iron silicate mineral commonly appearing pistachio green, yellow-green, olive green, deep green, or nearly greenish black.
It frequently forms elongated or stout prismatic crystals with pronounced longitudinal striations, but may also occur as fibrous, granular, or massive aggregates. Transparent specimens can show vivid vitreous lustre, while deeply coloured material may appear almost opaque.
In specimens associated with Prehnite, dark Epidote prisms may pass through rounded pale-green aggregates, allowing gentle accumulation and decisive direction to exist together.
In the DIYU Reading System, Epidote is not read through growth, but through passage.

Transparent and Dark Epidote
Epidote with Prehnite
Epidote is commonly represented by Ca₂Al₂(Fe³⁺,Al)(SiO₄)(Si₂O₇)O(OH), crystallises in the monoclinic system, has a Mohs hardness of about 6 to 7, and possesses one direction of perfect cleavage with brittle tenacity.
Variations in iron and aluminium influence colour and transparency. Some crystals are noticeably pleochroic, showing pale yellow, yellow-green, and deeper green from different directions.
Epidote occurs widely in regional and contact metamorphic settings and in hydrothermally altered rocks, and can form during alteration of minerals such as plagioclase. Common associates include quartz, calcite, feldspar, amphiboles, actinolite, and Prehnite.
Transparent and Dark Epidote
Clearer material displays prismatic structure, striations, fractures, and zoning most readily, while deep olive-green, brownish-green, or nearly black material gains visual weight through saturation and thickness.
“Black Epidote” can be a useful visual market description but does not define a separate species. Dark prismatic crystals associated with Prehnite, Quartz, or Calcite also cannot be identified as Schorl from appearance alone; reliable naming requires mineralogical evidence and dependable locality information.
Epidote with Prehnite
Prehnite builds rounded surfaces through the accumulation of many small crystals, while Epidote passes through the same environment as a defined prism. One increases volume and the other establishes direction, preserving two different growth strategies in a single specimen.
Reading Impressions
Green readily evokes vegetation and growth, yet Epidote often mixes yellow, brown, and nearly black tones into its green, giving life-like colour the weight of rock.
Elongated prisms and longitudinal striations establish a distinct direction. Unlike Prehnite, which gathers outward, Epidote can resemble roots passing through rock, branches extending through space, or a route continuing across difficult terrain.
Modern crystal culture sometimes associates Epidote with increase, attraction, initiative, or personal growth. These are cultural symbols rather than demonstrated functions of the mineral.
Epidote therefore comes to embody passage, direction, movement, resistance, and boundary.
Mineral Character
The tension of Epidote lies less in achieving a vivid green than in the way crystals maintain direction inside complex surroundings.
Some prisms establish a straight new axis; others intersect, lean, or become surrounded by other minerals. Resistance remains, yet direction continues by finding spaces through which growth can extend.
This contrast becomes especially clear with Prehnite: Prehnite fills space through accumulation, while Epidote preserves a route through what has become full.
Epidote therefore comes to embody passage, direction, movement, and boundary.
DIYU Reading
DIYU Reading
DIYU does not read Epidote as a force that accelerates growth or attracts desired outcomes.
What matters is how direction forms even when conditions remain incomplete.
Epidote does not always grow into open space. It may pass between Prehnite mounds, emerge between Quartz and Calcite, or change direction among fractures and neighbouring minerals.
Passage does not mean ignoring resistance. It means recognising that rock, boundaries, and other structures remain real while still finding a direction that can continue.
To read Epidote is not to demand that resistance disappear, but to understand that once direction begins to form, growth can keep moving through whatever space remains open.
