Matrix|

Matrix
Matrix

Not Reconstructing a Mineral’s Locality, but Giving It Ground Again
Once a mineral leaves its locality, it usually loses more than a piece of earth.
The rock layers, slopes, gravity, and surrounding space disappear with it. What remains is a specimen viewed in isolation. A case preserves it, a stand provides an angle, and a label records its name, locality, and dimensions.
Matrix begins with the relationship that has been lost between the specimen and the world around it.
It does not reconstruct the mineral’s original locality, nor does it pretend that the soil and stone before us came from the same vein. That history belongs to the mineral. It is not ours to rewrite.
Matrix creates a second ground.
A piece cut from a larger world, rearranged by human hands while allowing the mineral to remain complete.
A precise boundary stays visible at the edge. Earth, stone, and terrain form within it. The mineral may enter, and it may leave again.
Matrix is the English name of the project.
In Chinese, it is called 地塊—the ground piece.
It is neither a conventional base nor a miniature landscape. It is a piece of ground, and a way for a mineral to find its place within it again.
Between Two Complete Presences
The mineral is already complete.
It carries its own crystal structure, inclusions, locality, and time of formation. These facts do not need an artist to make them meaningful, nor should they be permanently altered for the sake of a work.
All human intervention therefore remains outside the mineral.
Mounting, cushioning, terrain, material, and color belong to the Matrix. The specimen is not drilled, coated, or permanently bonded for the sake of composition. Once removed, it remains an independent mineral specimen.
Removability is more than an engineering condition.
They meet without possessing one another.
Yet the human presence cannot disappear entirely.
If the structure does nothing more than raise the mineral, Matrix becomes another display stand. It must form its own proportions, slopes, boundaries, and space, clearly acknowledging itself as an authored field.
The mineral is not reduced to an artist’s material.
Matrix does not pretend to be a natural locality.
Two complete presences are brought together. Through position, weight, and the direction of the gaze, they create a relationship that neither could produce alone.
Matrix does not change the mineral.
It changes the conditions under which the mineral is seen.
L1|Ground
Matrix begins with the simplest place.
The ground.
This stage is not about a particular studio material. It asks what the visible surface is made of. Earth, sand, stone, and grains of different sizes create different colors, textures, and weights.
Yellow earth, red earth, grey stone, and white rock are the first grounds being tested.
They begin with a basic question:
What is this mineral standing on?
At first, it is easy to do too much.
Every added shadow, dry-brushed mark, and shift in color seems to bring the surface closer to a finished work. In practice, however, Matrix has gradually moved in the opposite direction.
Yellow earth needs only one accurate layer of color for the ground medium to become convincing. More marks do not necessarily bring it closer to land. They may only cause the maker’s hand to appear before the mineral does.
White rock has been more difficult. It first moved toward warm ivory and cream before returning to a cooler grey-white. White amplifies thickness, seams, and every difference between painted layers. The moment two bands of color appear along the side, the precise frame suddenly rises out of the ground.
These failures have made the purpose of L1 clearer.
The aim is not to paint a landscape onto a flat surface. It is to use the least intervention necessary for a ground to exist. When the color is accurate, the grain feels natural, and the contact between specimen and surface does not interrupt the eye, the empty board has already disappeared.
L1 is not a lesser version.
Some minerals need nothing more than a quiet piece of ground.
L2|Terrain
When the ground begins to rise, land gains direction.
L2 is terrain.
A slope can carry the eye to one side. A depression allows the mineral to settle downward. Ridges and stones establish support, transition, and weight. The specimen no longer stands on earth or rock alone; it enters a space with height and direction.
Stone cannot remain decoration here.
If removing a stone changes nothing about the mineral’s position, center of gravity, or way of being seen, that stone has not yet become terrain. It has merely been placed nearby.
Every rise must do something.
Terrain may continue the outward force of a crystal, or allow a heavy specimen to settle into the ground. Empty space is also part of the terrain. It determines how far the eye can travel and how much distance must remain around the mineral.
L1 gives the mineral ground.
L2 asks that ground to carry space.
Once the terrain is fixed, the world can no longer be casually rearranged. Stone, slope, and mineral enter a permanent relationship, as though the land already knew where it needed to rise and where it needed to stop.
L3|Strata
After terrain establishes space, one thing is still missing.
Time.
L3 is strata.
Weathering, cliffs, covering, and deposition cannot remain surface effects. They must relate to one another so that the land appears to have undergone change.
A cliff exposes the layers within.
Deposition leaves sequence and direction.
New material covers an older surface, while weathering slowly removes the edges of what was once whole. Height is no longer composition alone. It begins to carry an order of formation, damage, and renewed covering.
At L3, Matrix is no longer simply land with dimension.
It begins to carry a geological language that can be read.
This is still not a reconstruction of geology. The work does not claim that the mineral formed within the strata before us, nor does an invented landscape replace its true locality.
Strata borrows the ways in which nature leaves time visible.
Human hands reorganize weathering, deposition, and exposure so that the land carries not only space, but passage.
Ground is medium.
Terrain is space.
Strata is time.
DIXIANG|When Ground and Mineral Become a Single View
DIXIANG is not L4.
It is not the next level automatically reached by adding more material, texture, and labor.
DIXIANG is the aspect that appears when a work becomes whole.
The Chinese character 地, di, means earth or ground. 相, xiang, can mean appearance, aspect, or a condition formed through relations. Feng shui reads a place through terrain, orientation, and its surroundings. Geology traces past conditions through facies, including lithofacies and sedimentary facies.
DIXIANG holds these different ways of seeing within one name.
It claims no feng shui effect, nor is it a new geological classification. It describes the complete appearance that emerges when mineral, ground, terrain, and strata come into relation.
Remove the mineral, and the land loses its center.
Remove the land, and the mineral loses the direction it formed within the work.
Ground, terrain, and strata are still present, but they no longer need to be pointed out separately. Together with the mineral, they form a new scale, weight, path of light, and viewing distance.
What remains is no longer a mineral placed upon a Matrix.
It is a complete relationship, and the aspect through which that relationship appears.
This is DIXIANG.
Matrix Project|Time Anchors
August 4, 2026|The Matrix Project Is Defined
Matrix is established as a second field of support between the mineral and the human-made world. A shared frame, removable structure, and the boundary of human intervention form the project’s first system.
August 15, 2026|The Complete Concept Takes Form
Three conditions are established: the natural integrity of the mineral, the authored presence of the Matrix, and the third way of seeing produced when they meet.
The project no longer answers only how Matrix should be made. It begins to answer what Matrix is meant to reveal.
August 29, 2026|The Chinese Name 地塊 Is Chosen
Matrix is no longer described primarily as a base or a landscape module in Chinese.
A piece cut from a larger terrain and used to support a mineral again is formally named 地塊—the ground piece.
September 2026|L1 Ground Begins
The first group begins with yellow earth, red earth, grey stone, and white rock.
The current goal is not to produce DIXIANG ahead of time. It is to determine how little color, grain, and surface treatment each ground needs in order to become stable without drawing attention away from the mineral.
Once the first L1 grounds are complete, the project will move toward L2 Terrain. When three-dimensional structure can genuinely alter the mineral’s position, direction, and force, the work can continue toward L3 Strata.
DIXIANG has no scheduled date.
Nor will it appear simply because every step has been completed.
It occurs only when mineral and ground form a world that can no longer be read apart.
