Tabular Habit

Tabular Habit

導言

Introduction

Tabular Habit is a crystal-form description in which one dimension is much thinner than the other two, giving the crystal a plate-like, tablet-like, or broadly flattened proportion.

It describes how a crystal grew rather than what mineral it is. Many minerals can develop tabular habits. Although quartz is more commonly imagined as prismatic, it can also become distinctly flattened under suitable growth conditions.

A tabular crystal is also not simply a mineral that has been cut into a thin slab. Its broad faces and thin edge are products of crystal growth rather than later cutting.

In the DIYU Reading System, Tabular Habit is not read through flatness, but through plane.

Crystal form emerges from the relative growth rates of different faces. When thickness increases more slowly along one direction while the other two dimensions continue to develop, a crystal can become broad and thin.

Fluid supply, temperature, pressure, supersaturation, substrate orientation, neighbouring crystals, and available space can all influence those relative growth rates. Crystal habit is therefore a result of internal lattice structure interacting with external formation conditions.

Tabular habit must be distinguished from cleavage. Cleavage describes a mineral’s tendency to break along particular lattice directions. Quartz has no good cleavage, so tabular quartz should not be interpreted as material peeled into plates along cleavage planes.

Tabular habit is also not synonymous with Faden Quartz. Faden growth commonly involves repeated fracturing and regrowth in an opening vein and can produce flattened crystals with a central white thread, but being tabular alone does not identify quartz as Faden.

To read Tabular Habit is to observe how relative growth rates move the visual centre of a three-dimensional crystal away from a long axis and toward a broad plane.

Reading Impressions

Prismatic crystals often direct attention toward ascent and extension. A tabular habit shifts observation toward surface, edge, front and back, and the relationship between area and thickness.

Viewed face-on, the crystal may occupy a large visual field. Turn it to the side and the apparent mass suddenly collapses into a thin edge. The same crystal can therefore carry completely different weight depending only on orientation.

Tabular crystals readily evoke pages, panels, strata, sheets, interfaces, and planes that can be turned over.

Tabular Habit has therefore accumulated impressions of plane, direction, interface, reversal, and viewpoint.

Mineral Character

Those who spend time observing tabular crystals often discover that their fascination does not lie simply in thinness, but in how radically apparent mass is recalculated when orientation changes.

Face-on, the crystal is a plane; from the side, it becomes a line. At an angle, thickness returns to view. The object remains unchanged while observation continually changes its weight.

Unlike a single prismatic crystal dominated by one long axis, a tabular form lets two broad dimensions control the composition together. Attention moves not only forward but laterally across the surface.

Over time, Tabular Habit has come to embody plane, direction, interface, and turning.

DIYU Reading

DIYU Reading

DIYU does not read Tabular Habit as a special energetic form.

What matters is how the same object changes its apparent weight when the direction of observation changes.

We often imagine form as fixed: large is large and small is small. Turn a tabular crystal ninety degrees and a broad surface can nearly collapse into a line.

This is not visual deception. A three-dimensional object simply cannot be fully described from one angle.

To read Tabular Habit is to understand that a plane is not the absence of depth.

Some depth appears only after turning, and the fact that an object looks radically different from another direction does not make either view false.
