Onyx

Onyx

導言

Introduction

Onyx is not a separate mineral species, but a traditional name within the chalcedony–agate branch of the Quartz family.

In the modern jewellery market, it is easy to understand Onyx simply as “a black stone.” In stricter gemmological and mineralogical usage, however, the defining feature of traditional Onyx is not blackness itself, but layering.

Classic Onyx consists of relatively straight, parallel bands of contrasting colour, most famously black and white. This orderly planar banding distinguishes it from many agates whose bands are curved, concentric, or fortification-like.

At the same time, a large amount of material sold today as “Black Onyx” is actually black chalcedony whose colour has been produced or enhanced by treatment. The commercial name is deeply established, but it is not identical to the older structural definition of Onyx as parallel-banded agate.

To read Onyx, then, the first step is not to accept the name at face value.

It is to separate colour, banding, treatment, and material again.

Within the DIYU Reading System, Onyx is read through: layering.

Natural Reading

Onyx is composed primarily of silica, SiO₂. It belongs to the microcrystalline to cryptocrystalline chalcedony–agate system of Quartz, so it usually appears as a dense aggregate rather than as large, individually visible quartz crystals.

Its Mohs hardness is approximately 6.5–7, with a specific gravity around 2.60–2.65. It lacks obvious cleavage and may show conchoidal fracture. Unpolished surfaces can appear waxy, while a good polish produces a clean and concentrated lustre. These properties are inherited from chalcedony and agate; the name “Onyx” does not create a separate set of physical properties.

What gives Onyx its traditional identity is the arrangement of its bands.

Agate more broadly may display curved, concentric, fortification, eye-like, or irregular banding. Traditional Onyx emphasises flatter, straighter, nearly parallel layers. Contrasts between bands can arise from differences in colour, translucency, and fine inclusions, so cutting and polishing often reveal exceptionally clear boundaries between successive layers.

Those boundaries are not lines applied after formation. Natural banding develops as silica is deposited progressively within cavities, fractures, or other available spaces. Differences between successive silica-rich layers can preserve changes in colour, translucency, and included material, leaving the history of growth visible as interfaces.

Black colour requires a separate discussion.

GIA notes that naturally black chalcedony is comparatively rare, and that much of the material sold in the jewellery trade as Black Onyx is dyed black chalcedony. Dyeing does not transform silica into another mineral species, nor does treatment automatically make the material worthless. It is simply treatment information and should not be presented as naturally formed black colour.

There is another important naming boundary. Terms such as Onyx Marble, Mexican Onyx, and Limestone Onyx are commonly applied to banded calcite, aragonite, travertine, or cave-deposit carbonate materials. Their principal chemistry is CaCO₃ rather than SiO₂. They can be beautifully layered and are widely carved, but materially they are not quartz Onyx.

When identifying Onyx, it is therefore useful to separate at least three things:

naturally parallel-banded chalcedony or agate, black treated chalcedony sold commercially as Black Onyx, and decorative carbonate stone that carries “onyx” in its trade name.

A shared name does not guarantee a shared material.

Reading Impressions

The most memorable image of Onyx is often black and white.

Yet with longer observation, colour itself becomes less important than the interface between colours.

A black layer. A white layer. Then another layer begins.

The bands do not dissolve into one another like smoke, nor do they necessarily curve around a centre as many familiar agates do. Parallel layering creates a strong sense of direction: one zone ends here, and another begins beside it.

This clear separation of layers also made Onyx especially useful for hardstone carving and cameos. Carvers could place a figure, background, garment, or contour within different colour layers, allowing natural material boundaries to become part of the image itself. Museum collections preserve Onyx cameos from Roman antiquity through later European jewellery traditions.

In the modern market, however, the visual identity has shifted again.

“Black Onyx” often means a surface that is uniformly deep black, with little or no visible banding. The name has therefore accumulated contemporary associations with steadiness, protection, grounding, self-control, boundaries, or the idea of “absorbing negative energy” in modern crystal culture.

These are cultural and symbolic interpretations, not scientifically demonstrated mineral functions.

From a material perspective, even uniform blackness is frequently a treated market appearance rather than the central natural characteristic of traditional Onyx.

This makes Onyx unusually revealing.

One name can preserve two ways of seeing:

one sees the layers. the other sees only black.

Mineral Character

Onyx does not feel inherently closed.

Its character lies more precisely in division.

A uniformly black material draws the eye inward, turning the surface into a single continuous field.

Traditional parallel-banded Onyx behaves differently.

It repeatedly indicates:

this was one interval. here, conditions changed. then another layer continued to form.

Each layer touches the one beside it without needing to disappear into it.

Together they form one stone, while still preserving boundaries between different zones.

Those boundaries are not the same as fractures.

A fracture interrupts continuity. A band boundary, by contrast, can be evidence of continued growth. Difference has not broken the material apart; it has become part of the material’s construction.

Useful words for natural Onyx are therefore:

layer, interface, coexistence, continuation, and boundary.

DIYU Reading

DIYU Reading

DIYU does not read Onyx as “a black stone that blocks negative energy for you.”

If blackness becomes the entire story, we miss what is most worth reading in Onyx.

Traditionally, it is a material about layers.

Once one layer has formed, the next does not need to overwrite it into the same colour.

Difference can remain.

Boundaries can remain.

And the whole can continue to grow.

We often interpret having boundaries as rejection, isolation, or closure.

Natural banded Onyx offers another image.

A boundary does not always say:

you cannot come closer.

It may simply say:

this is me. that is you. we can meet without becoming the same thing.

In the same way, an experience that has ended does not need to be repainted or erased by the next one.

It can keep its own colour.

Another layer can continue beside it.

DIYU therefore does not read Onyx through defence.

It reads Onyx as giving difference a place within a larger whole.

A stable boundary does not need to push the entire world away.

It simply allows each layer to know where it ends.
