四川|Sichuan
Explore the mineral terroir of Sichuan, where mountain landscapes, world-renowned crystal localities, and collector culture have shaped a distinctive mineral identity.
Sichuan lies in southwestern China, where the enclosed and humid Sichuan Basin rises westward into plateaus, mountain ranges and deeply cut valleys.
Its mineral localities cannot be reduced to a single regional character.
Within DIYU’s current collection, Jinkouhe and Xuebaoding represent two distinctly different environments: one defined by exposed rock and canyon-like terrain, the other by high mountain mineral veins.
Reading Sichuan therefore begins not with similarity, but with the contrasts contained within the same geographical name.
Geography and Geology
Situated along the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, Sichuan has been shaped by mountain building and hydrothermal activity.
Among its best-known mineral localities, Xuebaoding is internationally recognized for aquamarine, muscovite, calcite, and fluorite, while Jinkouhe has become well known for its quartz specimens, including chlorite-included quartz favored by collectors.
Together, these localities reveal the diversity of Sichuan's mineral terroir.
Quality Characteristics
Well-formed crystals
Rich mineral associations
Well-defined crystal habits
Strong mineral contrast

Terroir Character
────────────────
Sichuan is often associated with clarity rather than abundance alone.
Transparent aquamarine, pale minerals, and balanced crystal associations have gradually shaped a shared impression of purity, balance, and mountain landscapes among collectors.
This character is not created by any single mineral, but by the accumulated experience of observing the region's specimens over time.
DIYU Reading

To read Sichuan, we must first let go of an overly simple assumption: that minerals from the same province should share a similar terroir.
Sichuan extends across basins, high mountains, plateaus and river valleys.
Its terrain rises rapidly westward from the relatively enclosed and humid Sichuan Basin. Mountain ranges are cut by rivers, while settlements, roads and mineral localities are distributed across different elevations.
These differences do more than alter the landscape. They also affect how rocks are exposed, how minerals are collected and how specimens leave their places of origin.
DIYU’s current reading of Sichuan focuses primarily on Jinkouhe and Xuebaoding.
They are not two examples of a single Sichuan terroir, but two almost opposing ways of viewing the region.
Jinkouhe is defined by a downward-cutting scale.
Canyons, steep slopes and exposed rock layers give the landscape a sense of compression, fracture and depth.
Specimens sold under the Jinkouhe name may include quartz, barite and their mineral associations. Crystal clusters and matrix often retain a strong sense of direction and structure, extending the act of viewing beyond a single crystal to the ways minerals attach, intersect and occupy spaces within the rock.
Locality records also remind us that market labels do not always identify one precise collecting site. Specimens from surrounding areas may also have entered the market under the more recognizable Jinkouhe name.
Xuebaoding, by contrast, creates an impression closer to an upward-rising high-mountain world.
The specimens familiar to collectors as “Xuebaoding” primarily refer to Xiaoxuebaoding and nearby mineral localities in Pingwu, Sichuan.
The hydrothermal veins in this area are associated with fractures in granite and marble, producing minerals such as scheelite, beryl, cassiterite and quartz.
Orange scheelite, beryl and other mineral associations have also made Xuebaoding a highly recognizable name in international mineral collecting.
More precisely, many well-known specimens come from Xiaoxuebaoding and surrounding localities, although the market usually simplifies the name to Xuebaoding.
This simplification is itself part of terroir.
Nature forms minerals, while people determine how a locality will ultimately be known through collecting, classification, naming and market circulation.
Sichuan therefore should not be assigned a single regional character.
Jinkouhe is read through canyon erosion, exposed rock layers and quartz associations. Xuebaoding is recognized through high-mountain mineral veins, distinctive mineral combinations and an international culture of specimen collecting.
Both belong to Sichuan, yet each is shaped by different natural conditions, mineral expressions and market histories.
To read Sichuan is first to recognize the internal differences contained within a vast region.
When viewing a mineral from Sichuan, it may help to temporarily set aside the provincial name and return to the more specific locality:
Does it come from a canyon or a high mountain?
Is the focus the crystal itself, its relationship with the matrix, or a distinctive mineral association?
How much of the locality name used today preserves actual geography, and how much has been simplified through the collecting market?
Sichuan provides the range, not the answer.
Its terroir only begins to emerge through the different landscapes, minerals and human pathways of Jinkouhe and Xuebaoding.
