Peñas Blancas

導言

Introduction

Peñas Blancas, located in San Pablo de Borbur in western Boyacá, Colombia, lies toward the northern part of the Western Emerald-Bearing Belt.

Although the region belongs to Colombia’s celebrated emerald landscape, Peñas Blancas has also become notable among mineral collectors for its quartz specimens.

Clear quartz, crystal clusters, varied growth textures, and the relationship between crystals and hydrothermal mineralization together shape the distinctive mineral character of this locality.

Within the DIYU Reading System, Peñas Blancas is also one of our important entry points into Colombian quartz.

Geography and Geology

Peñas Blancas is not a single mine, but a mineralized mountain area containing numerous small mines and prospects.

It lies within the Western Emerald-Bearing Belt of Colombia’s Eastern Cordillera. Parts of the mineralization occur within sedimentary rocks of the Rosablanca Formation, where dark limestones, carbonaceous mudstones, structural deformation, and hydrothermal veins form part of the geological setting.

Hydrothermal fluids moved through fractures and structural pathways, allowing quartz, calcite, dolomite, fluorite, and other minerals to form in different parts of the locality.

Specimen Characteristics

Quartz is well represented at Peñas Blancas. Collector specimens may show well-formed crystal outlines, distinct growth striations, clear to highly transparent crystals, clusters and intergrown crystals, as well as etching and varied growth textures.

Published locality records describe quartz as common in the area, including euhedral prismatic, drusy, and parallel-growth habits. Individual mines and stages of mineralization can nevertheless produce considerable variation, so these characteristics should be understood as collecting observations rather than diagnostic rules for provenance.

Terroir Character

The character of Peñas Blancas begins with quartz itself.

Transparent crystals, defined prism faces, growth striations, and intergrown clusters give many specimens a strong sense of crystalline structure and order.

Yet this clarity does not necessarily mean simplicity. Etching, surface deposits, mineral associations, and traces left by different stages of growth preserve evidence of a more complex hydrothermal history.

The terroir of Peñas Blancas can therefore be read through both the definition of its crystals and the layers left by their growth.

DIYU Reading

DIYU Reading

Within the DIYU Reading System, Peñas Blancas has become increasingly important as the provenance of our Boyacá quartz specimens has become more precise.

Among the specimens we encounter are quartz crystals sold under collector terms such as Golden Lemurian, together with pieces showing pronounced growth striations, etching, clustering, and distinctive crystal structures.

For DIYU, however, the value of Peñas Blancas is not in creating a visual formula that claims a specimen must come from PB simply because it looks a certain way. Instead, as provenance narrows from “Colombia,” to “Boyacá,” and finally to Peñas Blancas, the crystal can be placed back into a more specific geological landscape.

The crystal itself has not changed. What changes is the way we see it once we understand where it came from.
