Albite
導言
Introduction
Albite is one of the most common members of the feldspar family. Its ideal chemical formula is NaAlSi₃O₈, it crystallizes in the triclinic system, and it represents the sodium-rich end member of the plagioclase series.
It is commonly white, grey-white, or colourless, with a vitreous lustre. Crystals may be tabular, prismatic, blocky, or arranged as dense plates and aggregates. Compared with more intensely coloured minerals, Albite can appear visually quiet. Yet its widespread occurrence in igneous rocks, pegmatites, metamorphic rocks, and hydrothermal settings makes it an important reference point for understanding feldspars, rocks, and compositional change.
Albite forms a solid-solution series with Anorthite. Petrologists commonly describe positions within this series using the proportions of Ab, the albite component, and An, the anorthite component. Sodium-rich compositions approach Albite; with increasing calcium, the series passes through traditional compositional fields such as oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytownite.
These names are not determined directly by colour. They describe positions within a continuous compositional range.
Within the DIYU Reading System, Albite is read through “proportion.”
Natural Reading
Albite has the ideal chemical formula NaAlSi₃O₈ and crystallizes in the triclinic system. Mindat lists it as a valid IMA mineral species within the Plagioclase Group and Feldspar Group. Its Mohs hardness is approximately 6–6.5, its specific gravity about 2.60–2.65, and its lustre is generally vitreous to sub-vitreous. Two well-developed cleavage directions meet at angles close to 90°, so broken material often retains relatively flat and strongly oriented surfaces.
One of Albite’s most important relationships is the plagioclase series between Albite and Anorthite. In petrology, compositions are commonly expressed by their An and Ab proportions. An₂₄Ab₇₆, for example, represents approximately 24% anorthite component and 76% albite component. In the traditional compositional divisions, An₀–₁₀ corresponds to the albite field; with increasing calcium, the series passes through oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytownite before reaching the anorthite end member. These divisions are practical names applied to a continuous solid-solution series. Nature does not necessarily create an abrupt break at every naming boundary.
Fine parallel striations are common on Albite crystals and cleavage surfaces and are frequently related to polysynthetic twinning in plagioclase. The Albite law itself is one of the characteristic twin relationships of feldspars. Numerous thin twin lamellae repeat according to crystallographic rules, so a visually simple white crystal may reveal dense, ordered lines on closer inspection. These lines are not scratches added later; they are visible consequences of crystal structure and twinning.
Albite also has low- and high-temperature structural states. Their chemistry may be the same, while the degree of aluminium–silicon ordering within tetrahedral sites differs. Low Albite is more ordered, while High Albite is more disordered; Low Albite is the common natural form. The chemical formula can therefore remain unchanged while part of the mineral’s thermal and structural history is retained in its atomic arrangement.
Albite may crystallize directly from magma or late pegmatitic fluids, and it also occurs in metamorphic and hydrothermal environments. Another important process is albitization: sodium-rich fluids react with pre-existing rocks, modifying other feldspars or bulk rock compositions and producing albite-rich assemblages. This is not a surface stain. It is a fluid–rock reaction involving mineralogical and chemical reorganisation.
Cleavelandite, a familiar name in mineral collecting, refers to a platy or thin-bladed habit and varietal form of Albite, especially common in granitic pegmatite cavities. It may form white plates, fans, or radiating aggregates and frequently occurs with Tourmaline, Quartz, mica, and other pegmatite minerals. Cleavelandite is not a separate mineral species; it remains Albite.
Reading Impressions
The name Albite comes from the Latin albus, meaning white. The origin fits its most familiar appearance: white, milky white, grey-white, and sometimes colourless, with clean vitreous reflections across cleavage faces and thin plates.
Yet whiteness does not define Albite.
In mineral specimens, blocky or tabular Albite often behaves visually like a quiet terrain from which Tourmaline, Quartz, Apatite, and other pegmatite minerals emerge. Cleavelandite may instead spread into thin blades, fans, or radiating clusters. Albite is not always the most visually dominant mineral in a specimen, but it frequently helps determine how other crystals are supported, separated, and arranged.
This is one reason Cleavelandite has become a familiar collecting term. It describes a distinctive habit of Albite, not a separate or “higher-grade” mineral with different intrinsic effects.
Some Albite can also show subtle iridescence or moonstone-like optical effects, leading to varietal and gem-market terms such as Peristerite or Albite Moonstone. These names belong to the language of optical phenomena, varieties, and gem materials. They do not mean that every material sold as Moonstone is Albite; Moonstone as a gem name can involve more than one feldspar material.
The reading impression of Albite therefore does not need to begin with “white equals purity.”
What is more useful to observe is how a visually quiet material preserves small structural differences through proportion, twinning, plates, associations, and replacement.
Mineral Character
Albite’s character does not depend on intense colour. It is found in repetition.
One fine line, followed by another.
One thin plate, then another beside it.
In polysynthetic plagioclase twins, small crystallographic orientations repeat according to a regular relationship. In Cleavelandite aggregates, many blades build a surface larger than any single plate. During albitization, sodium-rich fluids may even transform pre-existing rock into a new mineral assemblage over time.
These processes occur at very different scales, but they point to the same thing: Albite is not simply a white material.
It is also an end member.
Across the plagioclase series, the change from sodium-rich to calcium-rich compositions is continuous. Each small change does not create an unrelated material. To describe that continuity, mineralogists and petrologists use Ab and An proportions together with traditional compositional names, turning ranges of composition into positions that can be communicated.
Albite therefore contains two very different kinds of order.
One appears as repeated lines produced by twinning and crystal structure.
The other appears when continuous composition is divided into useful proportional ranges.
Neither makes nature truly simpler.
They make differences that are continuous, fine-scaled, and difficult to describe more visible.
Through repeated observation, Albite begins to suggest: proportion, repetition, boundary, and continuity.
DIYU Reading
DIYU Reading
To DIYU, Albite is not read as “purity.”
White is easily translated by culture into cleanliness, blankness, or a fresh beginning, but those meanings are not mineralogical properties of Albite.
A more precise starting point is the plagioclase series.
Albite occupies the sodium-rich end, but natural plagioclase does not exist only as two endpoints. Sodium and calcium proportions vary continuously across the series, while names are assigned to compositional ranges so those positions can be described and compared.
Those boundaries are useful.
Useful, however, does not mean that nature has placed a wall at each boundary.
An₉ and An₁₁ are compositionally close, even if a conventional naming scheme places them in different ranges. Classification is therefore neither the opposite of nature nor an absolute truth. It is a method for communicating position after measurement.
This allows Albite to offer a more precise reading than “purity”:
Some questions are not best answered only by asking, “Which category is this?”
We can also ask:
What is the present proportion?
Which end is it closer to?
Does this boundary mark an abrupt material change, or is it a working boundary created to help us understand a continuum?
As the proportion changes, which name still describes the present position most accurately?
DIYU reads Albite through “proportion,” not because everything should be reduced to numbers.
The point is that within continuous change, classification can help us locate where we are — as long as the name does not make us forget the terrain that continues between names.
