導言|Introduction

Madagascar lies in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa. Although it is often imagined as a single tropical island, its landscape is far more complex, shaped by highlands, forests, river valleys, dry plains, and long coastal regions.
The central highlands form the island’s geographical spine. The east receives moisture from the Indian Ocean and is generally more humid, while the west and south gradually become drier and more open. Differences in elevation, rainfall, and underlying rock create distinct environments, allowing minerals to develop varied colors, crystal forms, and associations.
Madagascar’s geology is equally diverse. Ancient crystalline and metamorphic rocks extend across much of the central and eastern regions, while younger sedimentary formations are more prominent in the west. Pegmatites, metamorphism, and repeated geological activity have allowed a remarkable range of gemstones and mineral specimens to form and remain preserved.
For this reason, “Madagascar” does not describe a single mineral appearance.
Transparency, color, inclusions, mineral associations, and complex internal structures can all be found in specimens from the island. What deserves attention is not simply that these minerals share one country of origin, but that such varied mineral worlds can exist within the boundaries of a single island.

馬達加斯加主要由極為古老的前寒武紀地殼組成,地質歷史可追溯至數十億年前。
島嶼在遠古時期與非洲及印度分離後,經歷長時間的變質作用、花崗岩侵入與熱液活動,形成豐富的寶石與礦物礦床。
由於島嶼長期獨立演化,加上多樣的地形與氣候,馬達加斯加成為世界著名的綠柱石、電氣石、石英、長石及多種寶石的重要產地。
Madagascar is largely composed of ancient Precambrian crust dating back billions of years.
After separating from Africa and India, the island experienced prolonged metamorphism, granite intrusion, and hydrothermal activity, creating abundant gemstone and mineral deposits.
Its long geological isolation, combined with diverse landscapes and climates, has made Madagascar one of the world’s most important sources of beryl, tourmaline, quartz, feldspar, and many other minerals.

In DIYU’s reading of terroir, a country first provides a geographical range, rather than a fixed personality.
Madagascar can be approached through the question of how difference is contained. Central highlands and coastal lowlands, humid forests and dry terrain, ancient crystalline rocks and younger sedimentary formations coexist within the same island. These contrasts make it impossible for Madagascar to be represented by a single landscape or mineral.
The island also creates a particular way of seeing.
It is separated from the wider world by the ocean, yet internally it is far from isolated. Rock formations, climates, and elevations intersect across the island, concentrating an unusual degree of mineral diversity within one geographical space. Through gemstones, crystals, and rare minerals, people have gradually formed impressions of Madagascar and its localities through mining, trade, naming, and collecting.
Yet the reputation of a country should never replace the reading of a specific place.
A specimen labeled “Madagascar” still invites further questions. Did it come from the highlands, a river valley, or another geological environment? How were its colors and inclusions formed? And how much has the established reputation of Malagasy minerals already influenced the way we judge its value?
Within the current DIYU Reading, Antsirabe serves as one entry into the island. It does not represent Madagascar as a whole. Instead, it allows the broad scale of the country to gradually become a particular place that can be observed, understood, and explored.
To read Madagascar is not to search for one defining character of the island.
It is to observe how elevation, climate, rock, and time coexist within a land surrounded by ocean, forming a mineral world too diverse to be contained by any single name.
