Realgar

Realgar

導言

Introduction

Realgar is an arsenic sulfide mineral, now commonly represented by the molecular formula As₄S₄, and it crystallizes in the monoclinic system. Older mineralogical references often use the empirical formula AsS. Both describe the same 1:1 arsenic-to-sulfur ratio, while As₄S₄ more directly reflects the cage-like molecular units that make up its structure.

Fresh Realgar ranges from dark red and orange-red to red-orange, commonly with a resinous to greasy lustre. It is very soft, with a Mohs hardness of about 1.5–2, and is sectile rather than simply brittle. Well-formed specimens may develop prismatic crystals, though granular, massive, and crust-like forms are also common.

One of Realgar’s most important properties is not merely its colour, but its sensitivity to light. Prolonged illumination can drive a structural transformation toward Pararealgar, a different mineral with the same overall As₄S₄ composition. As this proceeds, the red-orange surface may become yellow-orange and progressively deteriorate.

Within the DIYU Reading System, Realgar is therefore not read through “fire” or protection from evil, but through “exposure.” Some materials are changed by the very light that makes them visible.

Natural Reading

Realgar is a valid mineral species with the ideal molecular formula As₄S₄ and a monoclinic crystal structure. Its structure can be understood as cage-like As₄S₄ molecules held internally by covalent bonds and arranged into a crystal through weaker intermolecular forces. This is why the older empirical formula AsS remains chemically meaningful, while As₄S₄ is more informative when discussing the actual molecular structure.

Its Mohs hardness is about 1.5–2 and its specific gravity is approximately 3.56. Cleavage is good on {010}; the mineral is sectile and slightly brittle. Fresh material may be transparent to translucent, with an orange-red to red streak and a resinous to greasy lustre. These properties give Realgar a visually saturated presence while also making well-formed crystals relatively delicate in handling.

Realgar most commonly forms as a low-temperature hydrothermal mineral, particularly in arsenic- and antimony-bearing veins. It can also occur in volcanic sublimates, hot-spring deposits, and some carbonate or clay-rich sedimentary settings. Typical associations include Orpiment, Arsenolite, Calcite, Baryte, and other arsenic minerals; in particular deposits it may also occur with Stibnite, Cinnabar, Quartz, and related sulfides.

Light sensitivity is a mineralogical fact that cannot be separated from Realgar. Sunlight and parts of the visible spectrum can induce transformation to Pararealgar. Yellow alteration products were historically sometimes identified simply as Orpiment, but Raman and X-ray studies have shown that Pararealgar is commonly a major product of this light-induced change. This is not merely fading: the material and crystal structure at the surface are actually changing.

For this reason, Realgar specimens are best protected from prolonged bright light and ultraviolet exposure, with display intensity and duration kept limited. Realgar is also an arsenic-bearing mineral. It should not be ground, cut, heated, or handled in ways that create dust, and it should never be ingested, added to food or drink, or used as a topical material. Washing hands after handling and preventing accidental access by children or pets are sensible collection practices.

Reading Impressions

Realgar has a cultural history far older than modern mineral collecting. Its intense orange-red colour made natural arsenic sulfides useful as pigments, leaving traces across the history of painting, decoration, and material culture in different parts of Eurasia. The English name “Realgar” is generally traced to the Arabic rahj al-ghār, commonly interpreted as “powder of the mine.”

In Chinese cultural history, xionghuang also became connected with seasonal customs, medicinal traditions, and ritual uses, including realgar wine during the Dragon Boat Festival and symbolic ideas of repelling pests or harmful influences. These belong to cultural history and folk practice, not to mineralogical evidence of function. Because Realgar contains arsenic, historical ingestion or topical use should not be treated as evidence of modern safety.

In mineral collecting, another powerful impression comes from the extraordinary saturation of its natural red-orange colour. Under light, resinous crystal faces can appear almost luminous, especially against white Calcite, colourless Quartz, or yellow Orpiment.

Yet Realgar also makes display itself paradoxical: the stronger and longer the illumination used to reveal the specimen, the more that illumination may contribute to its alteration. For a collector, the most revealing way to look at Realgar is not necessarily the brightest or the longest one.

Mineral Character

Realgar’s mineral character begins with an unusual set of contrasts.

Its colour is intense, yet the material is soft.

It can be transparent and visually brilliant, yet prolonged illumination is exactly what should be avoided.

Its overall molecular composition may remain As₄S₄ through part of the transformation, but once the atomic arrangement changes, the resulting mineral is no longer Realgar; it becomes Pararealgar.

The change is therefore not decorative weathering or a superficial stain. When light enters the system, appearance and structure can be reorganised together.

Realgar does not establish boundaries through stable geometry in the manner of Pyrite, nor does it draw direction through elongated growth like Rutile. It behaves more like a material in active dialogue with its environment: light is not merely the background. Light itself is a condition.

Useful keywords are: exposure, photosensitivity, transformation, preservation, condition.

DIYU Reading

DIYU Reading

DIYU’s reading of Realgar can begin with a direct natural fact: the light that allows us to see it may also be changing it.

This does not mean that “being seen is dangerous,” nor does it turn a mineral photochemical reaction into a scientific model of human psychology. It simply provides a precise natural image: an environment is not always neutral, and some forms of contact participate in the outcome.

We often treat “more light” as equivalent to “more clarity.” Brighter display, more information, greater exposure — as though increasing visibility must always bring us closer to truth.

Realgar offers another possibility.

Some things need to be seen and also need to be preserved, and those two aims do not always require the same action. The best condition may not be maximum brightness, but enough light to observe without continuously damaging the material.

The formation of Pararealgar adds another layer. Through part of this transformation, the overall composition may remain closely related, yet the structure is no longer the same. What looks like a shift from red-orange toward yellow-orange can therefore record a deeper history of environmental influence.

DIYU does not read Realgar as an instruction to hide.

It reads it as a question of choosing the conditions of exposure.

Not everything needs to remain in the brightest position at all times.

Preservation is not necessarily a refusal to be seen.

Sometimes it is knowing what deserves illumination, for how long, and when it should be allowed to return to shadow.
