Chivor
導言
Introduction
Chivor, located in Boyacá, Colombia, is one of the country’s most important historic emerald-producing regions.
Like Muzo, it is internationally known for emeralds, but Chivor belongs to the eastern emerald belt of Colombia’s Eastern Cordillera. Emerald, pyrite, calcite, dolomite, quartz, and other minerals together form part of its broader mineral landscape.
Within the DIYU Reading System, Chivor is understood not simply as another emerald locality, but as a mineral terroir where crystals can be read through the relationship between sedimentary rock, fractures, and mineralized veins.
Geography and Geology
Emeralds at Chivor occur within Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and are closely associated with organic-rich black shales and limestones.
Saline hydrothermal fluids moved through fractures and structural pathways, producing hydrothermal breccias, carbonate veins, and pyrite-rich mineralized structures in which emeralds could crystallize.
This interaction between sedimentary rocks and hydrothermal activity forms an important part of the distinctive geological setting of Colombian emerald deposits.
Specimen Characteristics
Representative specimens from Chivor often display strong contrast between crystals and dark matrix, visible veins and fracture structures, associations with pyrite and carbonate minerals, and well-defined crystal forms.
Emerald remains the locality’s most iconic mineral, while matrix and associated minerals often contribute significantly to the character of complete specimens.
These qualities describe recurring impressions found in representative specimens and should not be used alone to determine provenance.

Terroir Character
The character of Chivor often emerges from the visible relationship between crystal and rock.
Dark sedimentary matrix, pale mineral veins, metallic pyrite, and green emerald can create distinct lines, fractures, and layers of mineralization within a specimen.
The terroir of Chivor therefore extends beyond the colour of its crystals. The way rock fractures, mineralizing fluids enter, and crystals form within those spaces also shapes how this locality is read.
DIYU Reading
DIYU Reading
Within the DIYU Reading System, Chivor is a mineral terroir that can be approached through the idea of the vein.
Crystals do not simply appear inside rock. Fractures create space, fluids enter, and new minerals precipitate and crystallize within them. What eventually reaches a collector is only a small cross-section of a much longer geological process.
To read Chivor, then, is not only to observe an emerald. It is also to follow the mineralized traces around the crystal and read the place in which it formed.
