導言|Introduction

巴基斯坦位於南亞西北部,南側面向阿拉伯海。國土從北方世界級的高山地帶,經過印度河流域的廣大平原,延伸到西部乾燥高原、荒漠與南方海岸。北方高地、中央與東部的印度河平原,以及西南部的俾路支高原,構成這片土地最主要的地理範圍。

北方是巴基斯坦地形最為劇烈的區域。

喀喇崑崙、喜馬拉雅與興都庫什等大型山系,在北部與西北部彼此接近。高峰、冰川、裸露岩壁與深切河谷,使地表呈現強烈的高度差異。山脈並不是連續而封閉的牆,而是由不同方向的山脊、谷地、河流與高海拔盆地共同構成。

在這些高山之間,印度河及其支流逐漸匯聚。

河水從北方山地向南流動,穿過狹窄峽谷,進入較寬廣的平原,最後在南方形成河口與三角洲,注入阿拉伯海。高山帶來的岩石碎屑與沉積物,經過河流搬運,在低地逐漸累積,使印度河不只是地景中的水系,也成為連接高地、平原與海岸的重要軸線。

印度河以東與中部的廣大平原,與北方山地形成明顯對比。

這裡的地勢更加平緩,河道、沖積層、農地與聚落密集分布。旁遮普地區由印度河多條支流穿過,南方則逐漸進入更乾燥的平原與荒漠。看似平坦的土地,實際上保存著河流長期改道、沉積與人類利用所形成的複雜層次。

向西移動,地景再次改變。

俾路支高原位於伊朗高原的東南邊緣,由崎嶇山地、乾燥盆地、谷地與山麓平原共同構成。水分較少,地表覆蓋相對稀疏,岩層、褶皺與長時間風化留下的結構,因此更直接地顯露在視野之中。向南接近馬克蘭海岸,乾燥山地、沉積岩脊與阿拉伯海又形成另一種交界。

這些地形建立在複雜的地質背景之上。

北方高山涉及多個大型地質區域的碰撞、抬升與變形;西部則包含高原、褶皺山地與不同岩體。巴基斯坦地質調查局對吉爾吉特—巴爾蒂斯坦、斯卡杜及跨喜馬拉雅地區的研究,也反映北方不同山區具有各自的岩石、礦物與成礦環境。

因此,「巴基斯坦礦物」並不存在單一而統一的樣貌。

晶體可能來自北方高山中的裂隙與岩脈,也可能形成於其他完全不同的地質環境。石英、綠柱石、電氣石、長石與多種共生礦物,會隨具體產區、母岩與形成條件呈現不同的晶形、色彩和組合。

巴基斯坦首先是一個廣大的國家範圍。

真正的礦物風土,仍需要繼續走進吉爾吉特—巴爾蒂斯坦、斯卡杜、希格爾谷地,以及更具體的村落、山坡和採集區域,才能逐漸被辨認。

Pakistan lies in the northwestern part of South Asia and faces the Arabian Sea to the south. Its land extends from some of the world’s highest mountain regions through the broad plains of the Indus Basin to the arid plateaus, deserts, and coast of the west and south. The northern highlands, the Indus Plain across the center and east, and the Balochistan Plateau in the southwest form its principal geographical regions.

The north contains Pakistan’s most dramatic terrain.

The Karakoram, Himalayan, and Hindu Kush mountain systems approach one another across the northern and northwestern regions. High peaks, glaciers, exposed rock walls, and deeply cut valleys create extreme differences in elevation. These mountains are not a single continuous barrier, but a complex arrangement of ridges, river valleys, basins, and environments at different heights.

Among these mountains, the Indus River and its tributaries gradually converge.

Water moves southward from the highlands, passes through narrow gorges, enters the broader plains, and eventually reaches the Arabian Sea through its lower course and delta. Rock fragments and sediment carried from the mountains accumulate across lower ground, making the Indus not only a river system, but also the principal geographical connection between mountains, plains, and coast.

The broad plains of central and eastern Pakistan contrast strongly with the northern mountains.

Here the land becomes flatter, and rivers, alluvial deposits, cultivated fields, and settlements occur at far greater density. Punjab is crossed by several major tributaries of the Indus, while the landscape becomes progressively drier toward the south and the desert margins. Beneath the apparently level surface lies a long history of river movement, deposition, cultivation, and settlement.

Farther west, the landscape changes again.

The Balochistan Plateau occupies the southeastern margin of the Iranian Plateau and is composed of rugged mountain ranges, arid basins, valleys, and piedmont plains. Sparse vegetation leaves folds, rock layers, and weathered surfaces more directly exposed. Toward the Makran coast, dry mountains and sedimentary ridges meet the Arabian Sea, creating another transition between land and water.

These landscapes rest upon a complex geological background.

The northern highlands contain the effects of collision, uplift, deformation, and erosion across several major geological regions. Western Pakistan contains plateaus, fold belts, and varied rock units. Geological Survey of Pakistan research in Gilgit–Baltistan, Skardu, and the Trans-Himalayan region also reflects the diversity of rocks, minerals, and formation environments found within the northern mountains.

There is therefore no single appearance that can represent “minerals from Pakistan.”

Crystals may form within fractures and veins of the northern mountains or within entirely different geological environments elsewhere in the country. Quartz, beryl, tourmaline, feldspar, and associated minerals can develop different forms, colors, and combinations according to their locality, host rock, and conditions of formation.

Pakistan is first a broad national range.

Its mineral terroir only becomes clearer when the reading moves toward Gilgit–Baltistan, Skardu, the Shigar Valley, and eventually to particular villages, slopes, and collecting areas.

Northern Pakistan occupies one of the world’s most active tectonic zones, created by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates.

Millions of years of crustal uplift, magmatic activity, metamorphism, and hydrothermal circulation have provided ideal conditions for quartz, beryl, tourmaline, and many other minerals.

Steep alpine landscapes and continuous erosion have exposed numerous crystal-bearing veins, making Pakistan one of the world’s premier alpine mineral localities.

前面我們展示了巴基斯坦的風土與地質條件,接下來,讓我們以不同的角度閱讀這片土地。

對底域而言,巴基斯坦呈現的印象是「交會」。

世界對巴基斯坦的現代印象,經常從戰爭與動盪開始。

新聞中的邊界、衝突與不安,長久覆蓋著這個名字。即使從未到過那裡,我們也好像早已知道巴基斯坦是什麼。

但把時間向前推得更遠,出現的是完全不同的方向。

今日巴基斯坦境內的土地,曾承接印度河文明、犍陀羅與穿越群山的古代道路。尤其在北部與西北部,南亞、中亞、高原與更東方的世界曾沿著有限的通道彼此抵達。

這裡不只是帝國的邊界。

它也曾是古代世界的中樞之一。

人群在此穿越,商品在此交換,宗教、技術與語言也在漫長的移動中改變彼此。

「交會」從來不代表和平。

道路帶來知識與信仰,也帶來征服、遷徙、離散與重新建立。不同文明並未在此整齊相加,而是在一次次碰面之後改變彼此,留下無法再被拆回原貌的文化地層。

在北部高山地區,這種交會至今沒有消失。

希納語、巴爾蒂語、布魯夏斯基語、瓦罕語與其他地方語言,保存著不同社群對家族、信仰、遷徙與土地的理解。古代道路也曾使南亞、中亞、高原與更東方的世界在此交換商品、技術、信仰與語言。

山脈看似把世界分開,真正能夠通行的谷地與隘口,卻使每一次相遇變得更加深刻。

人們在阻隔中移動,也在移動中保留自己的名字。

於是巴基斯坦並不只是世界地圖上的邊界。它更像許多方向抵達之後,仍然持續向外延伸的節點。

當礦物從這些山谷來到我們面前,交會再次以物質的方式出現。

在底域目前接觸的北巴基斯坦標本中,許多晶體並不以孤立的形態成立。

海藍寶與長石、雲母、石英或黑色電氣石相遇;哈休比的石英也可能與綠簾石、冰長石或其他礦物共同生長。透明與粗糙、向上與承載、主晶與母岩,各自保有差異,卻在同一件標本裡改變彼此的位置。

這裡的「交會」同樣不等於和諧。

晶體可能彼此阻擋、干涉,也可能留下斷裂、覆蓋與空隙。有些方向因此停止,有些輪廓反而在碰撞之後變得更加清楚。

當然,標本的完整也不必只來自一枚毫無缺損的主晶。

它可能來自不同物質仍然保留各自的重量,最後共同形成一個可以成立的整體。

我們可以從戰爭與動盪開始了解巴基斯坦,卻不必停留在那裡。繼續向前,會看見古代中樞留下的道路、語言與文化;而靠近一件晶體,則會看見不同物質如何在有限空間中相遇,彼此改變,卻沒有因此失去自己的方向。

巴基斯坦讓我們看見,一片土地可以被衝突反覆切開,卻不會因此只剩斷裂;可以被世界賦予許多名稱,卻始終保有無法被任何名稱收盡的內部。

戰爭與動盪仍然存在,但它們不再佔據我們的全部視野。

晶體、語言與道路從那些裂隙之間重新出現,讓巴基斯坦不只是被世界觀看的地方,也重新成為一個曾經承接世界,並且仍與世界互相改變的交會之地。

願你在閱讀中,不急著替它完成定義。

有些地方真正留下的,不是一個答案。

Earlier, we introduced Pakistan’s terroir and geological conditions. Now, let us read this land from another perspective.

For DIYU, Pakistan presents an impression of “convergence.”

Modern impressions of Pakistan often begin with war and instability.

Borders, conflict, and uncertainty have long covered this name in the news. Even if we have never been there, we may feel as though we already know what Pakistan is.

Yet when we look further back in time, an entirely different direction emerges.

The lands within present-day Pakistan once carried the Indus Valley Civilisation, Gandhara, and ancient routes passing through the mountains. In the north and northwest especially, South Asia, Central Asia, the highlands, and worlds farther east once reached one another through a limited number of passages.

This was not merely the frontier of empires.

It was also one of the central junctions of the ancient world.

People travelled through it. Goods were exchanged there. Religions, technologies, and languages changed one another through long periods of movement.

“Convergence” has never meant peace.

The roads carried knowledge and faith, but also conquest, migration, separation, and rebuilding. Civilisations did not simply accumulate here in orderly layers. Through repeated encounters, they altered one another, leaving cultural strata that could no longer be separated into their original forms.

In the northern mountains, this convergence has not disappeared.

Shina, Balti, Burushaski, Wakhi, and other local languages preserve how different communities understand family, faith, migration, and land. Ancient routes also allowed South Asia, Central Asia, the highlands, and worlds farther east to exchange goods, technologies, beliefs, and languages.

Mountains appear to divide the world, yet the valleys and passes through which movement remained possible made every encounter more profound.

People moved through separation while continuing to carry their own names.

Pakistan, then, is more than a boundary on the world map. It resembles a node where many directions arrive and continue to extend outward.

When minerals leave these valleys and arrive before us, convergence appears once more in material form.

Among the specimens from northern Pakistan that DIYU has encountered, many crystals do not exist as isolated forms.

Aquamarine meets feldspar, mica, quartz, or black tourmaline. Quartz from Hashupi may grow together with epidote, adularia, or other minerals. Transparency and roughness, ascent and support, principal crystal and matrix—each retains its differences while altering the position of the others within the same specimen.

Here too, “convergence” is not the same as harmony.

Crystals may obstruct or interfere with one another, leaving fractures, overgrowth, and open spaces. Some directions are brought to an end, while other outlines become clearer through collision.

The completeness of a specimen does not need to arise solely from a flawless principal crystal.

It may emerge when different materials retain their own weight and together form a whole capable of standing.

We may begin our understanding of Pakistan with war and instability, but we do not need to remain there. Moving further, we find the roads, languages, and cultures left by an ancient centre. Moving closer to a crystal, we see different materials meet within a finite space, changing one another without surrendering their own directions.

Pakistan shows us that a land may be repeatedly divided by conflict without being reduced to fracture. It may be given countless names by the world while retaining an interior that no name can fully contain.

War and instability remain, but they no longer occupy our entire field of vision.

Crystals, languages, and roads reappear between those fractures. Pakistan becomes more than a place observed by the world. It becomes once again a place that received the world and continues to change with it through their mutual encounters.

As you read, may you resist defining it too quickly.

What some places truly leave behind is not an answer.

It is the trace of many directions that once met there and, even today, have never stopped extending outward.
