Aquamarine
導言
Introduction
Aquamarine is the pale blue, sky-blue, blue-green to deeper seawater-blue gem variety of beryl.
It shares the principal crystal structure of beryl with Emerald and Morganite, while iron-related colour centres and different iron states produce its blue to blue-green colour. Strong saturation is not required for Aquamarine to be visually distinctive; colour and transparency often work together.
Natural Aquamarine commonly forms transparent, elongated hexagonal prisms and may preserve fractures, fluid inclusions, tube-like features, and colour zoning.
People are often drawn not only to blue itself, but to the way pale colour and transparency create distance, making the crystal recall sky, deep water, or a far horizon.
In the DIYU Reading System, Aquamarine is not read through calmness, but through distance.
Natural Reading
Aquamarine is beryl, Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈. It crystallises in the hexagonal system and has a Mohs hardness of approximately 7.5 to 8.
Its blue and blue-green colour is mainly related to iron within the crystal structure. Different iron states alter visible-light absorption and can shift colour from greener seawater tones toward purer blue.
The beryl structure contains channels parallel to the long crystal axis, and natural Aquamarine may preserve elongated tube-like inclusions, fluid inclusions, and other growth features. These can affect transparency and sometimes produce directional optical effects.
Colour and transparency are separate qualities. Very pale material may be exceptionally clear, while stronger-coloured crystals can also remain transparent; fractures and inclusions may instead slow or scatter the light.
To read Aquamarine is to observe how trace iron gives an almost colourless beryl structure a cool hue and creates visible depth within transparency.
Treatment and Market Terms
「Santa Maria」
Heat treatment is one of the most common treatments in the Aquamarine market. Natural material can contain a stronger green or yellow-green component, and heating may reduce those tones to produce a purer blue appearance preferred by the market.
This treatment does not turn beryl into another mineral species; it changes visible colour. Treatment status should therefore be described separately from whether the crystal itself is natural.
Names such as “Santa Maria” originated in connection with strongly coloured material and particular Brazilian mining history, but the expression is also used commercially as a colour description. A trade label alone cannot establish locality.
Locality, colour grade, and treatment should be recorded separately. Colour provides visual information, while reliable provenance and treatment identification require supply-chain or gemological evidence.
Reading Impressions
Transparent blue readily evokes distant sky, open sea, ice, air, and the colour of water as depth increases.
Aquamarine has therefore long been associated with calmness, clarity, communication, travel, and protection at sea. Modern crystal culture also places it at the throat chakra and extends it toward expression and truthful speech. These are symbolic readings formed by colour, naming, and cultural history rather than demonstrated psychological or medical functions of beryl.
Its distinctive quality is the way pale blue and transparency increase a sense of distance. The eye can enter the crystal without immediately meeting a heavy field of colour, producing openness and depth.
Aquamarine has therefore accumulated impressions of distance, transparency, flow, clarity, and the far horizon.
Mineral Character
Those who spend time observing Aquamarine often discover that its fascination does not depend on maximum blue saturation, but on the way the crystal preserves distance inside transparency.
Paler colour allows the eye to travel farther inward, while stronger blue gives that space a clearer direction. Fractures and tube-like inclusions introduce pauses into an otherwise open interior.
Aquamarine therefore establishes presence less through visual weight than through space.
Over time, Aquamarine has come to embody distance, clarity, depth, and openness.
DIYU Reading
DIYU Reading
DIYU does not read Aquamarine as a source of calmness or communication ability.
What matters is how distance changes observation.
When we stand too close, detail can occupy the whole field of view. With greater distance, relationships, direction, and overall form can return. Aquamarine’s transparent blue holds a condition in which something remains visible without needing to be pressed against the eye.
Distance is not disconnection. Light still passes through and attention can still enter; enough space simply remains between observer and object.
To read Aquamarine is not to demand calmness. It is to understand that seeing clearly does not always require moving closer; appropriate distance is itself part of observation.
