山南|Shannan
導言
Introduction
Shannan lies in southern Tibet, where the northern Himalaya meets the southern Tibetan Plateau. It is also a locality that can easily disappear beneath the broader market label of “Tibetan quartz.”
In the collecting trade, more specific names such as Shannan, Cona, Lhozhag, or Lhünzê may be lost as specimens pass through multiple hands.
Within the DIYU Reading System, Shannan offers a way to move from the broad label “Tibet” back toward a more specific landscape.
Geography and Geology
Shannan occupies an important position within the Himalayan–Tibetan orogenic system and records complex metamorphic, igneous, and structural histories.
Mineral records include quartz and associated minerals from multiple localities such as Cona, Lhozhag, and Lhünzê. Some specimens are associated with granitic rocks, pegmatites, or hydrothermal veins formed during different geological stages.
“Shannan quartz” is therefore a regional provenance rather than a single deposit, and it does not correspond to one fixed crystal habit or colour.
Specimen Characteristics
Specimens with Shannan provenance often draw attention to the relationship between crystal and matrix rather than to the isolated crystal alone.
Collector material may include clear to grey-white quartz, clusters, multidirectional intergrowths, included or attached minerals, natural surface textures, and complete matrix specimens.
These features are useful for describing recurring collecting impressions, but they should not be treated as standalone diagnostic criteria for Shannan provenance.
Common Minerals and Forms
Clear Quartz
Crystal Clusters
Mineral Associations
Matrix Specimens
Common collector material associated with Shannan includes:
- Clear Quartz
- Crystal Clusters
- Mineral Associations
- Matrix Specimens
Individual localities can still produce very different crystal forms, associations, and matrix relationships, so habit descriptions cannot replace more precise collecting records.
Terroir Character
The collecting character of Shannan can feel comparatively quiet.
In many specimens, the tension does not come from an isolated crystal alone, but from the combined presence of crystal, matrix, associated minerals, and natural surface.
This makes Shannan useful for reading specimens as crystals that still retain a visible relationship to their geological environment, rather than reducing them to a fixed “Tibetan quartz” appearance.
DIYU Reading
DIYU Reading
Within the DIYU Reading System, the value of Shannan is not in creating a formula for what “Shannan quartz” should look like.
It is better understood as a process through which provenance becomes more visible. A specimen once known only as “Tibet” may later be traced to Shannan and, with stronger documentation, perhaps to Cona, Lhozhag, Lhünzê, or another more specific locality.
Some of DIYU’s supply channels connect to Shannan, but when the evidence does not reach a more precise collecting site, we do not invent one.
Reading provenance is not about making the label longer. It is about placing the specimen back onto the most specific piece of land that can actually be supported.
