導言|Introduction
西藏位於中國西南部,主要分布在青藏高原之上。這裡的平均海拔超過四千公尺,是地球上海拔最高、範圍最廣大的高原區域之一。高原的形成與長期的板塊碰撞、地殼增厚和山地抬升有關,也持續影響著亞洲的山脈、河流與氣候。
但西藏並不是一片平坦而均質的高地。
喜馬拉雅山構成南側最鮮明的山地邊界,岡底斯山與念青唐古拉山橫跨高原內部。北部與西部廣布高原面、湖盆、寬谷與山地;南部則有雅魯藏布江及其支流形成的河谷;向東移動,山脈與河流逐漸轉為南北方向,地表被切割成更深的高山峽谷。
西藏內部的氣候差異同樣明顯。
由東南向西北,環境大致從較溫暖、濕潤,逐步轉向寒冷與乾燥。藏東南的低海拔河谷可以出現森林、灌叢與較密集的水系;北部與西部則以高寒草原、荒漠、湖盆與裸露山地為主。高度、季風與地形共同控制水分如何進入,也使植物覆蓋與地表暴露呈現截然不同的狀態。
水也是理解西藏的重要線索。
雪山、冰川、湖泊與河流共同分布在高原之上。水從高處形成、匯聚,再沿著河谷切開山地。它有時停留在封閉湖盆,有時穿過峽谷流向更低的土地,使高原不只是遙遠而靜止的平面,也成為許多流動開始的地方。
在如此廣大的高原範圍內,岩石與礦物不可能擁有單一的形成環境。
山脈抬升、岩漿活動、變質作用、斷裂與侵蝕,在不同區域留下不同的岩層與礦物組合。來自西藏的晶體可能呈現透明、包裹體、共生、蝕刻、破損或重新生長,也可能因為採集位置與地表環境不同,保留完全不同的外觀。
因此,「西藏」首先是一個區域名稱,而不是一種礦物品種,也不是一種固定的晶體性格。
它所包含的,是高原、山系、河谷、湖盆與峽谷之間,持續發生的高度與環境轉換。
Tibet lies in southwestern China and occupies a large part of the Tibetan Plateau. With an average elevation of more than four thousand meters, it forms part of the highest and most extensive highland region on Earth. Its elevation developed through long-term continental collision, crustal thickening, and mountain uplift—processes that continue to influence the mountains, rivers, and climate of Asia.
Yet Tibet is not a flat or uniform highland.
The Himalayas form its most prominent southern mountain boundary, while the Gangdise and Nyenchen Tanglha ranges cross the interior of the plateau. Broad plateau surfaces, lake basins, valleys, and mountain terrain dominate much of the north and west. To the south, the Yarlung Tsangpo and its tributaries create extensive river valleys. Farther east, mountain ranges and rivers turn increasingly north–south, cutting the land into deep alpine gorges.
The climate also changes significantly within Tibet.
From southeast to northwest, conditions generally shift from relatively warm and humid to increasingly cold and dry. Lower valleys in southeastern Tibet can support forests, shrubs, and dense river systems, while the north and west are more strongly characterized by alpine grasslands, deserts, lake basins, and exposed mountain terrain. Elevation, monsoon influence, and topography determine how moisture enters the plateau and how much of the surface remains covered or exposed.
Water provides another way to understand the region.
Snow mountains, glaciers, lakes, and rivers coexist across the plateau. Water forms and gathers at high elevation before moving through valleys and cutting into mountain systems. In some places it remains within enclosed lake basins; elsewhere it passes through gorges toward lower lands. Tibet is therefore not simply a distant and motionless surface, but also a landscape from which movement begins.
Across such an immense highland region, rocks and minerals cannot come from one formation environment.
Mountain uplift, magmatism, metamorphism, faulting, and erosion have produced different rock units and mineral associations in different areas. Crystals from Tibet may contain inclusions, mineral associations, etched surfaces, fractures, or renewed growth, and specimens found in different terrain may preserve entirely different appearances.
“Tibet,” therefore, is first a regional name.
It is not a mineral variety, nor does it describe one fixed crystal character. It contains a continuing transition among plateaus, mountain systems, river valleys, lake basins, and deep gorges.

青藏高原的形成,源自約五千萬年前印度板塊持續向北推擠歐亞板塊所造成的造山運動。
板塊碰撞使地殼持續抬升,形成世界最高的高原與山脈,同時伴隨大量斷層、岩漿侵入、變質作用與熱液循環。
這些條件共同提供了石英等礦物生長所需的溫度、壓力與礦物流體,也使西藏成為世界知名的高山晶體產區。
The Tibetan Plateau formed through the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates, beginning roughly 50 million years ago.
This tectonic process uplifted the Earth’s crust to create the world’s highest plateau while generating faults, magmatic intrusions, metamorphism, and hydrothermal circulation.
Together, these geological conditions provided the heat, pressure, and mineral-rich fluids necessary for crystal growth, making Tibet one of the world’s most remarkable alpine mineral regions.

前面我們展示了西藏的風土與地質條件,接下來,讓我們以不同的角度閱讀這片土地。
對許多人而言,西藏常與遙遠、純淨與神聖相連。
這些感受來自高原的高度、信仰在土地中留下的痕跡,也來自人們對未曾抵達之地的想像。當我們沿著這些感受繼續靠近,真正的土地與生活其中的人,也逐漸從想像之中顯現。
對底域而言,西藏首先讓我們意識到:高度不只改變地貌,也改變人與距離相處的方式。
在高原,看得很遠,不代表能夠迅速抵達。
天空彷彿變近了,道路卻被拉得很長。山脊、湖泊、寺院與聚落,有時清楚地停留在視線裡,身體仍要穿過坡度、風、稀薄的空氣與漫長時間,才可能真正靠近。
於是,距離不再只是地圖上的長度。
它成為身體實際走過的時間,也成為人與一片土地逐漸產生感情的方式。
在藏傳佛教與苯教的繞行傳統中,人們圍繞寺院、佛塔或聖山行走。
這條路不以最快抵達為目的。
人一圈又一圈地經過相似的地方,讓步伐、呼吸、誦念與心願共同進入空間。每一次回到起點,也並非真正回到原來的位置。行走的人已經經過了一段時間,觀看也因此發生改變。
西藏文化讓我們看見,有些地方不是站在遠處就能理解。
必須走入其中,必須繞行,甚至必須帶著疲憊、記憶與願望,再次回到眼前。
一件晶體也可以如此閱讀。
正面只是一個入口。
當晶體被緩慢轉動,原先藏在背面的晶面、裂隙、覆蓋、母岩與共生關係才逐漸顯現。同一件晶體沒有改變,改變的是觀看者所在的位置,以及視線曾經走過的路徑。
這不是將宗教意義移植到礦物之上。
而是從一種文化理解空間與時間的方式,重新思考我們應當如何接近眼前的晶體。
一件晶體可以被托在掌心,使原本屬於遠方的距離突然收近。若來源能夠被確認,它確實保留著某一處岩體、裂隙與生長環境留下的痕跡,卻不會因此代表整個西藏。
但人仍可能對它產生感情。
不是因為它替整片土地發言,而是它使一處未曾抵達的地方,在眼前有了可以相遇的尺度。
那份感情可以很單純。
是對漫長形成時間的敬意,是對遙遠來處的想像,也是看見一件自然之物跨越土地,最終進入另一個人生活時,所產生的珍惜。
從西藏進入阿里,高原的廣度逐漸收束成更具體的地表與產地;從阿里進入一件晶體,風土又回到可以被觀察的結構、方向與生長痕跡。
每收束一次,想像便退後一步,物質則向前一步。
但想像並沒有因此消失。
它只是獲得了邊界,也獲得了可以落地的地方。
而從這件晶體出發,視線仍然可以再次向外展開。
回到高原如何形成,回到人如何行走於土地,回到信仰如何被放進日復一日的步伐,也回到一件自然之物如何跨越遙遠的距離,與另一個人的生命短暫相遇。
這才是西藏在底域之中的位置。
它不是一個神祕的產地標籤,而是一片讓觀看慢下來,也讓距離重新具有感情的土地。
高度把土地拉遠,晶體把物質帶近。
在兩者之間,文化使距離不再只是空白,而成為人願意一步一步走過的時間。
願你在閱讀中,找到一種不急著抵達,卻仍願意靠近的步伐。

The preceding sections introduced the terroir and geological conditions of Tibet. Now, let us read this land from another perspective.
For many people, Tibet is closely associated with distance, purity, and the sacred.
These impressions arise from the altitude of the plateau, the traces that faith has left upon the land, and the imagination drawn toward a place not yet reached. As we follow these feelings and move closer, the land itself—and the people who live within it—gradually emerge from behind those images.
For DIYU, Tibet first reveals how altitude changes not only the landscape, but also the way people experience distance.
On the plateau, being able to see far does not mean being able to arrive quickly.
The sky appears closer, while the road stretches farther. Ridges, lakes, monasteries, and settlements may remain clearly visible in the distance, yet the body must still pass through slopes, wind, thin air, and long hours before it can truly approach them.
Distance therefore becomes more than a length measured on a map.
It becomes time traversed by the body, and a way through which affection for a land gradually takes shape.
Within the circumambulation traditions of Tibetan Buddhism and Bön, people walk around monasteries, stupas, and sacred mountains.
The purpose of this path is not to arrive as quickly as possible.
People pass through similar places again and again, allowing footsteps, breath, recitation, and intention to enter the space together. Each return to the starting point is not a return to exactly the same place. Time has passed through the person walking, and the act of seeing has changed with it.
Tibetan culture shows us that some places cannot be understood by observing them from a distance.
They must be entered and circled. Sometimes they must be approached again while carrying fatigue, memory, and hope.
A crystal can be read in a similar way.
Its front is only one entrance.
As the crystal is slowly turned, faces, fractures, coverings, matrix, and mineral associations previously hidden from view begin to appear. The crystal itself has not changed. What changes is the viewer’s position and the path already travelled by the gaze.
This does not transfer religious meaning onto the mineral.
Instead, it draws from a cultural way of understanding space and time to reconsider how we might approach the crystal before us.
A crystal can be held in the palm, suddenly drawing a distant place near. If its origin can be verified, it retains traces of a particular body of rock, fracture system, and environment of growth. Yet it does not speak for Tibet as a whole.
A person may still form an emotional connection with it.
Not because the crystal represents the entire land, but because it gives an unreached place a scale at which an encounter can occur.
That feeling can be simple.
It may be respect for the time required for the crystal to form, imagination directed toward its distant origin, or the sense of care that arises when a natural object crosses the land and eventually enters another person’s life.
As we move from Tibet into Ngari, the breadth of the plateau narrows into a more specific terrain and locality. As we move from Ngari into an individual crystal, terroir returns to observable structures, directions, and traces of growth.
With each narrowing of scale, imagination recedes by one step and matter moves one step forward.
Imagination does not disappear.
It gains a boundary and a place where it can take form.
From the crystal, the gaze can open outward once again.
It may return to the formation of the plateau, to the ways people move across the land, to the way faith enters the rhythm of daily footsteps, and to the passage through which a natural object crosses a great distance and briefly meets another human life.
This is the place Tibet occupies within DIYU.
It is not a mysterious label of origin, but a land that slows the act of seeing and allows distance to carry feeling once again.
Altitude draws the land farther away. The crystal brings matter closer.
Between them, culture transforms distance from an empty interval into time that people are willing to cross, one step at a time.
May you find, through this reading, a way of moving that does not rush to arrive, yet remains willing to draw closer.
