Ganesh Himal Grey Phantom Quartz | Nepal | Layered | DIYU | B01-002
Description
Some mountains exist on the surface of the earth.
While some mountains,
are hidden within mountains.
---
The starting point of this work comes from the ghost phantom inside the crystal.
Between transparency and opacity, layers upon layers of stacked terrain can be seen.
As if ancient mountains were sealed within the crystal.
Not one mountain.
But many mountains.
---
Thus, one begins to ponder:
What if landforms don't only exist externally?
What if the formation of a mountain,
is itself the result of countless layers?
---
"Layering" continues the structural language found within minerals.
The base is made of bluestone to provide support.
Following the direction of the internal mountain ranges within the crystal, the stratification originally sealed within the mineral is extended outwards.
It's not about recreating a mountain.
But rather allowing the internal time of the mineral to manifest itself once again.
The crystal and the base are not deliberately fused completely.
Instead, a clear and visible connection is preserved at the point where they meet.
This is not a trace of construction.
But rather a part of the artwork.
"Layering" does not discuss natural landscapes themselves.
But rather the process of landform formation.
Therefore, the connections are not hidden.
Instead, their existence is deliberately preserved.
Like the interfaces between strata.
Like the traces left when dikes cut through country rock.
And like the stratification accumulated in a mountain over different ages.
When viewed from a distance.
It is a complete landscape.
When viewed up close.
One can see the boundaries where different materials meet.
Because layering does not eliminate differences.
But rather forms new structures within those differences.
---
This is also the second piece in the B01 "Conceptual Language" series.
If "Continuation" discusses the extension of landforms.
Then "Layering" discusses,
how landforms are formed.

Design
