The Met describes a Maya vessel with a hidden spherical air chamber inside the bird head: when water was poured into or moved through the vessel, displaced air produced a birdlike warbling whistle. Such sound-making vessels could participate in ceremonies where music, dance, prayer, food and drink were channels for communicating with divine powers.

BLIND SPOT
