Turning a Hidden Coif Support into a Conspicuous Gold Head Ornament|
The Met describes the Dutch oorijzer ('ear-iron') as a frame worn by women to hold fabric coifs in place. Initially functional and almost hidden, its pointed ends became increasingly conspicuous and decorative by the later eighteenth century; the Friesland example is made with gold filigree, enamel, pearls, and separate ornaments.
BLIND SPOT
