導言|Introduction

中國位於亞洲東部,面向西太平洋。廣大的陸地範圍,從世界最高的高原與山系,延伸到內陸盆地、北方草原、乾燥荒漠、東部平原,以及濕潤的東南丘陵與海岸。

這片土地最清楚的地形特徵,是高度由西向東逐步下降。

西部的青藏高原構成最高的一層,平均海拔超過四千公尺,並與喜馬拉雅、崑崙等大型山系相連。向東移動,地勢進入高原與盆地交錯的中間區域;再往東,土地逐漸下降為平原、丘陵、河口與沿海地帶。這種由高至低的階梯結構,使山脈、河流、氣候與人類活動,在廣大範圍內形成不同的方向與密度。

但中國並不是由幾個整齊排列的地形區塊組成。

高山與盆地彼此相鄰,乾燥荒漠之外仍有雪山與河谷;東南沿海雖然濕潤,也分布著大量丘陵與山地。高度、季風、水分與岩層的改變,使不同區域形成截然不同的自然條件。西北部較為乾燥,岩體與地表容易直接暴露;東部與南部水分較多,植物、土壤與河流則更深地參與地景的形成。

地形的差異,也對應著複雜的地質背景。

古老陸塊、活動山系、沉積盆地、岩漿作用與變質作用,在不同時期共同塑造這片土地。中國的礦物並非來自單一成礦環境,而是分布在多個地質單元與礦帶之中。青藏高原、東部中生代岩漿活動區與北方地質帶,便保存著不同類型的礦床與礦物組合。

因此,「中國礦物」並不存在一種可以代表全部的樣貌。

透明而完整的晶體、帶有包裹體與共生的標本、經過風化與暴露的礦物,以及形成於不同高度與岩層中的晶體,都可能被收進同一個國家名稱之下。真正需要閱讀的,是這個廣大名稱之內,究竟包含了哪些彼此不同的地方。

China lies in eastern Asia, facing the western Pacific. Its immense land area extends from the world’s highest plateau and mountain systems to inland basins, northern grasslands, arid deserts, eastern plains, and the humid hills and coastlines of the southeast.

The clearest structure of this landscape is its general descent from west to east.

The Tibetan Plateau forms the highest level, averaging more than four thousand meters above sea level and connecting with major mountain systems such as the Himalayas and the Kunlun Mountains. Moving eastward, the land enters an intermediate region of plateaus and basins before descending again toward plains, hills, river deltas, and coastal terrain. This stepped relief gives mountains, rivers, climate, and human settlement different directions and densities across the country.

Yet China is not composed of neatly separated geographical zones.

Mountains stand beside basins, while snow-covered ranges and river valleys appear beyond arid deserts. The humid southeast is not simply flat or tropical, but is also shaped by extensive hills and mountain terrain. Changes in elevation, monsoon influence, water, and underlying rock create sharply contrasting environments. In the drier northwest, rock bodies and land surfaces are often more directly exposed; in the east and south, vegetation, soil, and rivers participate more deeply in shaping the visible landscape.

This geographical variety is matched by an equally complex geological history.

Ancient continental blocks, active mountain systems, sedimentary basins, magmatism, and metamorphism have shaped different regions at different times. China’s minerals do not arise from one geological environment, but occur across numerous geological units and metallogenic belts. The Tibetan Plateau, the Mesozoic igneous regions of eastern China, and the geological belts of the north preserve different mineral deposits and associations.

For this reason, there is no single appearance that can represent “minerals from China.”

Transparent and well-formed crystals, specimens containing inclusions and mineral associations, weathered minerals exposed at the surface, and crystals formed under very different elevations and rock conditions may all be placed beneath the same country name. What deserves to be read is the range of distinct places contained within that broad label.

自前寒武紀以來,歷經板塊碰撞、海洋閉合、火山活動、花崗岩侵入與變質作用,不同年代所形成的岩石共同構成今日複雜的地質景觀。

這些漫長的自然作用,不僅塑造了山脈與地形,也提供了晶體形成所需的溫度、壓力、流體與化學環境,使中國成為世界重要的礦物產區之一。

China lies across several major geological provinces, making it one of the most geologically diverse regions on Earth.

Since the Precambrian, tectonic collisions, ocean closures, volcanism, granitic intrusions, and metamorphic events have shaped a remarkably complex geological framework.

These long geological processes created the temperatures, pressures, fluids, and chemical environments necessary for crystal formation, making China one of the world’s most significant mineral-producing regions.

DIYU 閱讀|DIYU Reading

在底域的風土閱讀裡,國家首先提供範圍。

它讓我們知道一顆晶體位於哪一片較大的土地,又處在什麼樣的地形與氣候脈絡之中。但國家名稱並不直接等於產地性格,更不能替所有礦物建立相同的想像。

閱讀中國,可以先從「轉換」開始。

視線從西部的高原與山脈向東移動,海拔逐漸下降,空氣、水分、植物與人類活動也不斷改變。高處的寒冷與裸露,內陸盆地的封閉與沉積,北方荒漠的乾燥與風化,以及東南丘陵的濕潤與覆蓋,讓土地呈現出彼此不同的觀看方式。

在高海拔地區,尺度往往先於細節出現。

山體、河谷與裸露岩層,使人感受到垂直方向、距離與長時間的地質作用。晶體也容易被放進高度、純淨、艱難取得與遠離日常的想像之中。但這些感受並不只來自晶體,也來自人如何觀看高原與山脈。

在乾燥的北方與西北內陸,地景則以暴露、移動與風化展開。

水分減少,植物變得稀疏,礫石、岩體與地表裂隙更加直接地被看見。風持續搬運細小物質,也讓原本埋藏或被覆蓋的部分逐漸顯露。荒漠並不是空白,而是一片不斷失去、保留與重新排列的土地。

向東南移動,水分與植物重新進入觀看。

丘陵、河谷與沿海山地,使岩石不再總以完整裸露的方式出現。土壤、植被、雨水與人類長期生活,共同覆蓋並改變地表。這裡的風土不只存在於岩層,也存在於土地如何被使用、命名、運輸與理解。

這些差異提醒我們,礦物從來不是從抽象的國家名稱中出現。

它來自具體的山體、裂隙、河谷與岩層,也經過採集者、商人、收藏者與市場的轉手,才逐漸以某個產地名稱被人認識。國家提供地圖,產區讓地圖開始具有場所,而礦物則保存其中可以被觀看的證據。

在目前的底域閱讀中,我們將從福建、阿里與戈壁,進入中國的不同方向。

福建讓我們走向濕潤的東南丘陵與沿海山地;阿里將視線帶入青藏高原西部的高度、寒冷與開闊;戈壁則讓地表的乾燥、暴露與風化成為閱讀的起點。它們並不是中國的完整代表,而是三個彼此差異明顯的入口。

閱讀中國,不是尋找一種統一的土地性格。

它更像是在一張由高原、盆地、荒漠、平原與丘陵共同構成的地圖上,看見自然條件如何持續轉換,也看見同一個國家名稱之下,礦物如何攜帶彼此不同的地景、時間與人文經驗。

中國提供的是尺度。

真正的風土,則要在我們走進每一個具體地方之後,才逐漸形成。

In DIYU’s reading of terroir, a country first establishes a range.

It tells us within which larger land a crystal was found and what geographical and climatic context surrounds it. Yet a country name does not directly create the character of a locality, nor can it give every mineral within its borders the same meaning.

China can first be read through the idea of transition.

As the gaze moves from the western plateaus and mountain systems toward the east, elevation gradually decreases, while air, water, vegetation, and human activity continue to change. The cold exposure of high ground, the enclosure and accumulation of inland basins, the dryness and weathering of northern deserts, and the humid cover of southeastern hills each produce a different way of seeing the land.

At high elevation, scale often appears before detail.

Mountain masses, valleys, and exposed rock create a sense of vertical direction, distance, and geological time. Crystals from such environments are easily connected with ideas of height, purity, difficult access, and separation from ordinary life. Yet these impressions arise not only from the minerals themselves, but also from the human imagination of plateaus and mountains.

In the dry north and northwest, the landscape unfolds through exposure, movement, and weathering.

As moisture decreases and vegetation becomes sparse, gravel, rock, and fractures across the surface become more visible. Wind continues to transport smaller material, gradually revealing what had once been buried or covered. Desert is not an empty surface. It is a land where material is continually removed, preserved, and rearranged.

Moving toward the southeast, water and vegetation return to the act of seeing.

Hills, valleys, and coastal mountains mean that rock does not always appear in complete exposure. Soil, vegetation, rainfall, and long histories of human settlement cover and alter the surface. Here, terroir exists not only in rock, but also in the ways land has been inhabited, named, transported through, and understood.

These differences remind us that minerals never emerge from an abstract country name.

They come from particular mountains, fractures, valleys, and rock bodies. They also pass through the hands of miners, traders, and collectors before becoming known through a locality name. The country provides a map; the locality turns that map into a place; the mineral preserves the evidence through which that place can be observed.

Within the current DIYU Reading, Fujian, Ngari, and the Gobi offer three different entries into China.

Fujian leads toward the humid hills and coastal mountains of the southeast. Ngari brings the gaze into the altitude, cold, and openness of the western Tibetan Plateau. The Gobi begins with dryness, exposed surfaces, and the long work of weathering. None of these places represents China as a whole. They are distinct points of entry into a much larger terrain.

To read China is not to search for one unified character of the land.

It is to move across a map formed by plateaus, basins, deserts, plains, and hills, observing how natural conditions continually change—and how minerals carried beneath the same country name may preserve entirely different landscapes, times, and human histories.

China provides the scale.

Terroir only begins to take form when we enter a particular place.
