Within the same department, cold highlands and alpine terrain coexist with warmer and more humid western slopes descending toward the Magdalena Valley. These rapid changes in elevation and landscape make it impossible to understand Boyacá as one uniform mineral locality. DIYU’s current reading of Boyacá focuses primarily on Peñas Blancas in the western part of the department. The locality has become especially recognisable through quartz specimens known for exceptional clarity, bright lustre and well-defined crystal forms. Reading Boyacá therefore does not attempt to represent the entire department through one character. It uses Peñas Blancas as a focused entrance into the ways transparency, mineral form and market circulation create a distinctive locality image.

Boyacá is the name of a large and varied department. The Eastern Cordillera crosses its territory, forming high mountains, plateaus, river valleys, western slopes and lower landscapes descending toward the Magdalena Valley. Changes in elevation create differences in temperature, vegetation, settlement and human activity. The mineral localities distributed across Boyacá therefore cannot share one uniform terroir. Peñas Blancas is a more focused locality within this much larger regional setting. It lies in western Boyacá near San Pablo de Borbur, within a mountainous mineral belt long associated with Colombia’s emerald industry. The Colombian Geological Survey locates the Peñas Blancas mineralised district north of San Pablo de Borbur and west of Otanche. DIYU’s current reading, however, does not focus on emerald from Peñas Blancas. It focuses on quartz. In the Chinese collecting market, this quartz has become especially recognisable through its exceptional clarity. When light enters the crystal, its external faces, internal fractures, growth markings and inclusions can become visible at the same time. Transparency does not make the crystal empty. Instead, it reduces the visual barrier between the viewer and the interior, allowing details left by natural growth to be observed more directly. Some crystals appear almost water-clear or glass-like. Others retain fine veils, fractures, signs of rehealing, iron deposits or small inclusions within an otherwise transparent body. Even when a crystal is not completely flawless, it may still create an overall impression of brightness, cleanliness and clarity. This visual quality allows Peñas Blancas to establish an identity before any complex cultural or historical explanation is required. People often notice how transparent the crystal is before asking where it comes from. This differs from Ganesh Himal. Ganesh Himal frequently attracts attention first through its sacred name, Himalayan setting and cultural imagination. Peñas Blancas is more often recognised through the transparency and lustre of the mineral itself, with the locality name adding geographical and collecting context afterward. Peñas Blancas is therefore a locality in which mineral expression carries particular weight. Locality records describe colourless quartz in clear prismatic crystals, druses, overlapping formations and parallel growth. Pyrite and occasional fluorite may also occur as associated minerals. This variation reminds us that exceptional clarity is the strongest market impression of Peñas Blancas, but not its only mineral expression. Quartz from the same locality may occur as a single crystal or as a cluster. It may have a simple, clearly defined outline or a more complex structure formed by intersecting and parallel crystals. It may appear almost colourless, or contain internal features, surface deposits and mineral associations that add further layers. Transparency is also not proof of locality. Many places in the world produce clear quartz. A crystal cannot be identified as coming from Peñas Blancas solely because it displays high clarity. Conversely, a well-documented Peñas Blancas specimen does not lose its provenance because it contains fractures, misty zones or inclusions. Locality character provides a direction for reading, not a final conclusion of identification. Market selection has further strengthened the association with transparency. The clearest crystals, brightest faces and most complete terminations are more likely to be photographed, traded and remembered. As such specimens repeatedly appear in the Chinese market, exceptional clarity becomes closely connected with the name Peñas Blancas. What the market repeatedly presents, however, is usually the most desirable part of a locality’s production. Matrix specimens, complex associations, damaged crystals and material with lower transparency may appear less often in the general crystal market, even though they remain part of the locality’s actual mineral diversity. The name itself has also been simplified through circulation. Peñas Blancas began as a specific Spanish place name. As crystals passed through collecting, local trade, export and the Chinese market, the name became shorter and easier to remember. This simplification increased recognition, but it could also obscure the fact that Peñas Blancas belongs to the larger mountain and emerald-producing landscape of western Boyacá. DIYU therefore retains Boyacá as the regional level of the page, while using Peñas Blancas as the actual centre of the reading. Boyacá provides the broader background of mountains, valleys, mining and internal regional differences. Peñas Blancas brings this background into focus through the transparency, crystal form and internal structure of quartz. To read Boyacá in this context is also to read transparency. Transparency, however, is not simply cleanliness, nor does a crystal become more complete as it approaches visual perfection. It is a condition of viewing. When light can enter the crystal, fractures, inclusions, growth lines and internal layers no longer remain hidden. The crystal may appear clear, but that clarity allows more of its natural formation to be seen. When viewing quartz from Peñas Blancas, begin by observing how easily light passes through the crystal. Then consider the definition of its faces, the direction of crystal growth, the fractures, veils and inclusions preserved within it, and the ways several crystals may grow in parallel, intersect or form a cluster. It is also worth asking: Are you attracted to transparency itself, or to the interior world that transparency allows you to see? Clarity is the most recognisable quality of Peñas Blancas, but the locality does not offer an empty and featureless crystal. It makes the crystal’s contents more accessible to the eye. Boyacá provides the broad regional background. Peñas Blancas uses transparency to condense that background into a direct mineral experience. A complete reading of terroir recognises how the market creates locality identity, while returning to each individual crystal to determine what is actually preserved within its clarity.
