巴西位於南美洲東部,東側面向大西洋,國土橫跨赤道以南的廣大範圍。它幾乎占據南美洲東半部,從北方的亞馬遜河流域,延伸至中央高原、東部沿海山地、南部高原與廣闊海岸。如此巨大的尺度,使巴西不可能由單一森林、河流或氣候概括。
巴西的地表主要由高原、平原與低地凹陷共同構成。中央高原、米納斯吉拉斯中南部高地、東部亞馬遜高原與巴拉那高原,分布在不同區域;亞馬遜低地、潘塔納爾濕地與沿海平原,則呈現河流沉積、水分匯聚與季節淹水形成的另一種地貌。
北方的亞馬遜流域,是巴西範圍最廣大的地景系統之一。

東南內陸的米納斯吉拉斯,則呈現另一種高原世界。
丘陵、山地、河谷與古老岩體在這裡反覆交錯。「Minas Gerais」的名稱本身便與礦山和礦產歷史相連。鐵、金與其他工業礦產長期影響地方經濟,而東部與東北部的偉晶岩區,也以石英、綠柱石、海藍寶、電氣石、長石、雲母及多種收藏礦物聞名。巴西地質調查資料顯示,米納斯吉拉斯部分偉晶岩體可以同時產出海藍寶、藍綠色電氣石、石英、長石、雲母與其他稀有元素礦物。

東北部與內陸乾燥區域,也不能被濕潤熱帶的印象遮蔽。
半乾旱高地、裸露岩體、低矮植被與季節性河流,使水分成為限制地景的重要條件。岩石在強烈日照、溫差與有限降雨之間持續風化,呈現與亞馬遜森林、東南山地及南部高原截然不同的表面。
因此,「巴西礦物」不存在一種可以代表全部的外觀。
晶體可能來自古老結晶岩中的偉晶岩,也可能形成於金屬礦脈、變質岩帶、火山岩孔洞或沉積環境。石英、紫水晶、綠柱石、電氣石、黃玉與其他礦物,會因產區、母岩與形成條件不同,呈現完全不同的晶形、色彩、包裹體與共生關係。
巴西首先提供的是一個近似大陸的國家範圍。
真正的礦物風土,需要繼續走進米納斯吉拉斯、巴伊亞、戈亞斯、南里奧格蘭德,以及更具體的礦區、山地與採集場所,才能逐漸被辨認。
Brazil lies in eastern South America, facing the Atlantic Ocean and extending across an immense area south of the Equator. It occupies much of the eastern half of the continent, reaching from the Amazon Basin in the north to the central plateaus, eastern coastal mountains, southern highlands, and a long Atlantic coast. At this scale, Brazil cannot be represented by a single forest, river, or climate.
Its surface is formed principally by plateaus, plains, and depressions. The Central Brazilian Plateau, the highlands of south-central Minas Gerais, the Eastern Amazonian Plateau, and the plateaus of the Paraná Basin occupy different regions. The Amazon lowlands, the Pantanal, and coastal plains present another type of terrain shaped by river deposition, converging water, and seasonal flooding.
The Amazon Basin in the north forms one of Brazil’s largest landscape systems.
Countless rivers descend from the foothills of the Andes, ancient uplands, and the interior of the forest before joining the Amazon River. Water transports sediment, reshapes riverbanks, and forms floodplains, tributaries, and wetlands across lower ground. Dense forest conceals much of the surface, yet beneath the vegetation and soil lie important differences between sedimentary basins and ancient crystalline regions. Brazilian geographical research also emphasizes that the Amazon is not a homogeneous forest, but contains many distinct combinations of relief, soil, and vegetation.
Toward the center, the land gradually enters broad plateaus and savanna environments.
The Central Plateau is not one continuous flat surface. It is composed of tablelands, hills, valleys, ridges, and depressions. It also functions as an important divide between major river systems. Water flows outward toward the Amazon, Tocantins, São Francisco, Paraná, and Paraguay basins, making central Brazil a region from which movement begins in several directions.
The landscape becomes more strongly divided in the east and southeast.
Along the Atlantic side, ancient plateaus and coastal mountain systems approach the ocean, creating ridges, hills, deep valleys, and narrow coastal plains. Moisture arriving from the sea is lifted by the terrain, while forest, exposed rock, and dense human settlement overlap. Much of Brazil’s population and urban development has historically concentrated near the Atlantic coast, where natural terrain has continually interacted with roads, agriculture, mining, and cities.
In the southeastern interior, Minas Gerais presents another highland world.
Hills, mountain ranges, valleys, and ancient rock bodies repeatedly intersect. The name “Minas Gerais” itself is connected with a long history of mines and mineral extraction. Iron, gold, and other industrial minerals have shaped the region, while pegmatite districts in the east and northeast are known for quartz, beryl, aquamarine, tourmaline, feldspar, mica, and many collector minerals. Geological Survey of Brazil records show that some pegmatites in Minas Gerais contain aquamarine, blue and green tourmaline, quartz, feldspar, mica, and rare-element minerals within the same regional systems.
Farther south, the Paraná Plateau preserves evidence of immense volcanic activity.
Successive basalt flows covered a vast region. Rivers later cut through these layers to form cliffs, steps, and gorges. Cavities and fractures in the volcanic rock were later filled by quartz, chalcedony, agate, and amethyst, creating a mineral world very different from the pegmatites of Minas Gerais.
The northeast and the drier interior should not be concealed beneath Brazil’s humid tropical image.
Semi-arid uplands, exposed rock, low vegetation, and seasonal rivers make water a defining limitation of the landscape. Strong sunlight, temperature change, and irregular rainfall continually weather the surface, producing conditions unlike those of the Amazon forest, southeastern mountains, or southern volcanic plateau.
There is therefore no single appearance that can represent “minerals from Brazil.”
Crystals may come from pegmatites within ancient crystalline rocks, metallic veins, metamorphic belts, volcanic cavities, or sedimentary environments. Quartz, amethyst, beryl, tourmaline, topaz, and other minerals take on different forms, colors, inclusions, and associations according to locality, host rock, and conditions of formation.
Brazil first provides a national range approaching the scale of a continent.
Its mineral terroir only becomes clearer when the reading enters Minas Gerais, Bahia, Goiás, Rio Grande do Sul, and eventually particular mountains, mines, and collecting sites.

Much of Brazil is built upon ancient cratons whose geological history extends back billions of years.
Long periods of tectonic stability, magmatic activity, metamorphism, and hydrothermal circulation created extensive quartz veins and a remarkable variety of mineral deposits.
These ancient geological foundations have made Brazil one of the world’s greatest crystal-forming regions.

在底域的風土閱讀裡,巴西可以先從「豐富與差異」開始。
豐富並不只是種類很多。
它也意味著不同形成環境被集中在同一個國家名稱之下。森林覆蓋的低地、裸露的高原、濕潤沿海山地、半乾旱內陸與火山岩平台,共同形成巴西礦物的廣大背景。
巴西礦物在市場中,常以鮮明色彩、巨大晶體與種類繁多被認識。
紫水晶晶洞、海藍寶、電氣石、黃玉、石英與多種寶石,使巴西逐漸成為全球收藏者熟悉的產地名稱。這種名聲讓「巴西」具有很強的辨識度,卻也可能使不同州、礦區與地質環境被合併為一種模糊的豐盛印象。
因此,閱讀巴西需要先區分國家的名聲與礦物的具體來源。
一顆標示為巴西的晶體,只能說明它位於廣大的國家範圍內。它可能來自米納斯吉拉斯的偉晶岩區,也可能來自巴伊亞、戈亞斯或南部玄武岩中的晶洞。即使是相同種類的石英,也可能因母岩、溶液成分、形成空間與後期變化不同,呈現完全不同的形態。

米納斯吉拉斯不能代表整個國家,卻是理解巴西礦物文化的重要入口。古老高原、丘陵與河谷之間,分布著礦山、偉晶岩體與長期形成的採集網絡。石英、海藍寶、電氣石與多種共生礦物,從不同礦區進入市場,使地方名稱逐漸與色彩、透明度、晶體尺度及收藏價值相連。
但米納斯吉拉斯也不能只被理解為一座巨大的礦物倉庫。
礦物的出現依賴具體岩體與形成條件;它們被人發現之後,還要經過採掘、搬運、清理、分類、命名與交易。自然形成的晶體與人類建立的價值系統,在這些過程中彼此交疊,才共同塑造我們今天所理解的產區性格。
閱讀巴西,不是將所有晶體放進熱帶、色彩與豐盛的固定敘事。
它更接近從亞馬遜河流的匯聚,走向中央高原的分水;從沿海山地的覆蓋,走向內陸岩體的裸露;再從國家的廣大名稱,逐漸回到一段偉晶岩、一座礦山,以及一顆具有具體來源的晶體。
巴西提供的是多樣性的尺度。
真正的風土,則從每一種形成環境、每一條採集路徑,以及每一個沒有被「巴西」二字取代的具體產地開始。

In DIYU’s reading of terroir, Brazil can first be approached through abundance and difference.
Abundance does not only mean a large number of mineral varieties.
It also means that many formation environments are gathered beneath the same national name. Forested lowlands, exposed plateaus, humid coastal mountains, semi-arid interiors, and volcanic platforms together form the immense background of Brazil’s mineral world.
Brazilian minerals are often recognized in the market through vivid color, large crystals, and extraordinary variety.
Amethyst geodes, aquamarine, tourmaline, topaz, quartz, and many gemstones have made Brazil a familiar name among collectors worldwide. This reputation gives the country strong recognition, but it can also merge distinct states, mining districts, and geological environments into a vague image of richness.
To read Brazil therefore requires a distinction between national reputation and specific origin.
A crystal labeled “Brazil” only places it within a very broad national range. It may come from a pegmatite district in Minas Gerais, another locality in Bahia or Goiás, or a cavity within southern basalt. Even quartz of the same mineral variety can develop very different forms because of differences in host rock, fluid composition, growth space, and later alteration.
Brazil also shows that mineral abundance cannot be separated from mining history.
From colonial gold and diamonds to later iron ore, gemstones, and industrial minerals, extraction has long participated in the formation of cities, roads, settlements, and regional economies. Miners, collectors, traders, and the mineral market did not merely remove minerals from the land; they also established systems of value defining which colors, forms, sizes, and origins became most desirable.
The character of terroir therefore does not arise from nature alone.
It is also formed through the naming of mining districts, the recognition of quality, the construction of trade routes, and the shared image of “Brazilian crystals” developed through long circulation.
Within the current DIYU Reading, Minas Gerais serves as the next entry into Brazil.
Minas Gerais cannot represent the entire country, but it is an essential entry into Brazilian mineral culture. Mines, pegmatite bodies, and collecting networks are distributed among ancient highlands, hills, and valleys. Quartz, aquamarine, tourmaline, and many associated minerals have entered the market from different districts, gradually connecting local names with color, clarity, crystal scale, and collecting value.
Yet Minas Gerais should not be understood simply as an immense mineral storehouse.
Minerals appear only within particular rock bodies and formation environments. After they are found, they pass through extraction, transport, cleaning, classification, naming, and exchange. Natural crystal formation and human systems of value overlap throughout these processes, together shaping the character now associated with the locality.
To read Brazil is not to place every crystal inside a fixed narrative of tropical color and abundance.
It is to move from the convergence of Amazonian rivers toward the divides of the central plateau; from the covered surfaces of coastal mountains toward exposed inland rock; and from the scale of a national name back toward a pegmatite body, a mine, and a crystal with a specific origin.
Brazil provides the scale of diversity.
Terroir begins with each formation environment, each collecting route, and each specific locality that has not been replaced by the word “Brazil.”
