Chlorite
導言
Introduction
“Chlorite” may look like the name of a single mineral, but in modern mineralogy it is more accurately understood as a group of related sheet-silicate minerals.
The group includes several distinct species, among the most common of which are Clinochlore and Chamosite. Their chemistry varies substantially through magnesium, iron, aluminium, and silicon substitutions, so there is no single exact formula that adequately describes every natural specimen called Chlorite.
The name derives from the Greek chloros, meaning green. Many chlorites are indeed pale green, grey-green, deep green, or blackish green, but colour is not absolute; some members and chromium-bearing varieties can also be white, pink, or purple.
What makes Chlorite especially important is often not the production of dramatic specimen crystals.
It commonly appears where rocks are changing.
Low-grade metamorphism.
Hydrothermal alteration.
Deep burial.
The readjustment of higher-temperature minerals during cooling and fluid interaction.
A rock containing biotite, amphibole, pyroxene, or other ferromagnesian minerals may develop Chlorite as temperature, pressure, fluid activity, and chemistry change.
Chlorite therefore occupies a quiet but important position:
it shows how a system can move from one mineral relationship toward another while still forming a structure that is stable enough to exist in between.
Within the DIYU Reading System, Chlorite is read through:
transition.

Chlorite belongs to a group of sheet silicates. Most members are monoclinic, although triclinic and orthorhombic members or polytypes also occur. It is therefore not completely accurate to state that every Chlorite is monoclinic, even though monoclinic symmetry is the most representative classification for the group.
Their structure can be understood approximately as a 2:1:1 layered arrangement: a tetrahedral–octahedral–tetrahedral T-O-T sheet alternating with an additional hydroxide-rich octahedral sheet containing magnesium, iron, aluminium, and related cations. This layered structure strongly influences both appearance and physical behaviour.
As a group, chlorites commonly have a Mohs hardness of about 2–3 and a specific gravity around 2.6–3.3. They generally show very good basal cleavage. Thin flakes may be flexible, and lustre ranges from pearly and greasy to dull. Chlorite may occur as platy, flaky, foliated, fibrous, earthy, or dense aggregates, and very commonly as fine grains within rock.
Because Chlorite is a group, chemistry is best understood through individual mineral species.
Clinochlore, for example, has the ideal formula Mg₅Al(AlSi₃O₁₀)(OH)₈ and commonly contains substantial Fe²⁺ in natural material. Chamosite is a more iron-rich chlorite. Extensive chemical substitution links these and other members of the group.
A green platy mineral therefore cannot be assigned to a particular chlorite species by colour alone.
Colour itself requires more careful reading.
Magnesium-rich, iron-poor Clinochlore may be very pale or nearly white. Increasing iron commonly produces deeper green and blackish-green material. Chromium-bearing Clinochlore can become pink, crimson, or purple. “Chlorite equals green” is therefore a useful naming history and common visual tendency, not an absolute identification rule.
One of the most important geological contexts of Chlorite is its relationship with low-grade metamorphism and alteration.
In pelitic rocks, mafic igneous rocks, and other materials rich in ferromagnesian minerals, burial, regional metamorphism, contact metamorphism, or hydrothermal activity can promote the formation of new Chlorite. Greenschist, chlorite schist, phyllite, and some greenstones may contain abundant chlorite.
Yet “green metamorphic rock equals Chlorite” is still too simple.
The green colour of greenschist-facies rocks may also involve Actinolite, Epidote, and related minerals. Rock colour and rock name do not replace mineral identification.
More importantly, Chlorite does not occur only along a single upward metamorphic path.
It can form as a stable mineral during low-grade prograde metamorphism, but it can also appear during retrograde metamorphism or hydration of higher-temperature minerals. Amphibole, biotite, pyroxene, and other phases may be partly replaced by Chlorite as a rock cools or interacts with later fluids.
The presence of Chlorite therefore does not by itself say, “this rock is moving toward a higher metamorphic grade.”
It may also record cooling, retrogression, or later fluid-driven alteration.
Direction has to be reconstructed from mineral assemblage, texture, reaction relationships, and geological context.
Commercial and gem-market names also require separation.
Seraphinite is generally a varietal or trade name applied to chatoyant, feather-patterned Clinochlore material; it is not a separate mineral species. Kämmererite is commonly used for chromium-bearing pink to purple Clinochlore.
“Chlorite Quartz,” meanwhile, usually refers to Quartz containing Chlorite-group inclusions, coatings, or growth layers. Quartz remains the host mineral and Chlorite is a separate mineral phase within or upon it. It is not an independent mineral species called “chlorite quartz.”
Reading Impressions
Chlorite is easily seen through the visual language of vegetation.
Leaves.
Moss.
Algae.
Forest.
Even Chlorite inclusions inside transparent Quartz are often described in the market as gardens, landscapes, forests, or moss-like internal scenes.
These metaphors are visually understandable, but they remain metaphors.
Chlorite is not a plant, and its green colour is not evidence of a “life energy.”
Its colour arises from mineral chemistry, especially the proportions and substitutions of magnesium, iron, chromium, and related elements within its structure.
Another strong impression comes from its layered character.
Chlorite does not usually present itself as a hard, enclosed geometric body.
It more often forms flakes, plates, foliated aggregates, coatings, and replacement textures.
Light moves across the surface.
Layers separate along cleavage.
Whole portions of a rock may acquire a green colour and foliated texture when chlorite becomes abundant.
Its presence is therefore often less like “one object standing there”
and more like an entire region of the rock changing texture.
This becomes especially clear where earlier minerals such as biotite or amphibole are being replaced.
The earlier mineral does not necessarily disappear at once.
Edges may alter first.
Fluids may enter fractures first.
Fine Chlorite may develop progressively along positions that were already occupied.
One material begins to become another while the two states overlap for a long interval.
This is what makes Chlorite more interesting than the vague idea of “change.”
Transformation is not a button.
In nature, it often has thickness, duration, and intermediate states that can be observed.
Contemporary crystal culture sometimes associates Chlorite or Chlorite-bearing Quartz with cleansing, grounding, repair, regeneration, nature connection, or emotional healing.
These are cultural and personal symbolic readings rather than scientifically demonstrated mineralogical, medical, or psychological effects.
Without adopting those claims, Chlorite already offers a more concrete natural image:
when change is happening, the middle is not empty.
Mineral Character
The geological term “low-grade metamorphism” is easy to misunderstand in ordinary language.
Low can sound inferior.
As if the rock has not yet reached “real” metamorphism.
That is not what metamorphic grade means.
Grade describes the range of temperature, pressure, and related conditions experienced by a rock.
Under certain low-grade metamorphic conditions, Chlorite is not an unfinished product.
It is one of the genuinely stable minerals of that environment.
This gives Chlorite a distinctive character.
It frequently appears within transitional ranges without lacking a structure of its own.
It has its own lattice.
Its own cleavage.
Its own chemical range.
It may remain stable within a rock for geological spans of time.
Transition therefore does not mean unimportant.
Nor does it mean temporary compromise.
A transitional state can itself be complete.
At the same time, Chlorite reminds us that knowing we are “in the middle” is not enough.
The same broad mineral group can occur in geological histories moving in different directions.
Chlorite may form during prograde low-grade metamorphism.
It may also form when higher-temperature minerals cool, hydrate, and alter during retrograde metamorphism or later fluid activity.
Two rocks may both contain Chlorite.
The direction by which they arrived there can be completely different.
The mineral alone does not automatically provide the arrow.
We have to examine what occurs beside it.
What it replaces.
Which structures it cuts.
Which fractures fluids used.
Which minerals came earlier and which appeared later.
This makes the reading of transition more precise.
Not simply: something is changing.
But:
from where is it changing, and toward what?
Through repeated observation, Chlorite begins to suggest:
alteration, overlap, direction, and transition.
DIYU Reading
DIYU Reading
DIYU does not read Chlorite as a mineral that “heals, cleanses, or regenerates” a person.
Those may exist as cultural symbols, but they are not mineralogical functions.
What makes Chlorite more useful is that it turns the vague phrase “transitional period” into an observable material condition.
We often recognise only two ends.
What something used to be.
What it is supposed to become.
The interval between them is treated as a period to escape as quickly as possible.
A work system is rebuilt: the old method no longer functions well, while the new one is not yet stable.
A body of work changes language: the earlier visual system is receding, while the new one has not fully matured.
A brand changes direction: the previous audience still exists, while the new identity has not yet accumulated enough recognition.
Such states are easily described as:
“not finished yet.”
Chlorite offers another natural image.
A rock does not always jump directly from A to B.
As conditions change, new minerals can begin to form.
Earlier minerals may remain partly present.
Two structural states can overlap.
An intermediate assemblage can become genuinely stable under the conditions of that stage.
It is not an incorrect picture.
Nor is it merely a draft waiting to be deleted.
It is the way the system remains coherent under those particular conditions.
This does not mean every intermediate state should be preserved forever.
Chlorite may be stable under one set of conditions and later be consumed or replaced when conditions shift again.
Transition therefore does not ask us to become attached to the middle.
It asks us to identify:
Why does this form work now?
Which condition is it solving?
Is it still supporting the next step?
Or have we simply become accustomed to an intermediate state and forgotten the direction?
More importantly:
are we moving forward into new conditions, or cooling, returning, and reorganising after an earlier state?
Both histories can produce new Chlorite.
The appearance may be similar while the geological story is different.
To read Chlorite is to recognise that an intermediate state can have real value
without confusing “remaining in the middle” with direction itself.
It leaves one final distinction:
transition is not the same as being unfinished.
It is a form that allows a system to remain coherent while its conditions are changing.
