DR Congo
Explore a mineral-rich land shaped by ancient crust, rivers, and deep geological time.
導言|Introduction
Congo lies near the center of the African continent, crossing the Equator and occupying a vast part of the Congo River Basin.
At the heart of the country is an immense, low-lying central basin. Rivers pass through forests and wetlands before gradually joining the Congo River, making water not only part of the landscape, but also one of the main structures connecting distant regions.
Yet Congo is not simply a flat expanse of tropical rainforest.
Beyond the central basin, the land gradually rises. Plateaus, grasslands, and woodlands appear to the north and south, while the east becomes more rugged, shaped by mountains, lakes, and volcanic landscapes. Differences in elevation, rainfall, rock, and geological activity allow widely contrasting environments to exist within the same country.
The southeastern plateau presents another landscape.
Farther from the humid center of the basin, the land becomes more open and connects with one of Central Africa’s most significant mineral belts. Copper, cobalt, and other mineral resources have made this region one of the most familiar entry points into Congo’s mineral world.
For this reason, “Congo” cannot be contained by the image of rainforest, river, or mineral wealth alone.
It includes lowlands and plateaus, humid forests and drier open terrain, as well as mineral traces formed under different geological conditions. The scale of the country means that every specific locality can reveal only one part of a much larger world.
Geological Background
DR Congo lies within ancient African cratonic terrains and several major mineral belts, including the Central African Copperbelt.
Long periods of sedimentation, metamorphism, tectonic activity, and hydrothermal circulation have produced extensive copper, cobalt, and associated mineral deposits.
Compared with Mexico’s volcanic landscape, DR Congo reflects the long-term concentration and transformation of minerals within ancient crustal environments.

In DIYU’s reading of terroir, a country first provides a geographical range. It helps us understand the landscape and natural setting within which a specific locality exists.
Congo can first be read through the ideas of basin and convergence.
Countless tributaries enter the central basin from different directions and gradually form an immense river system. Water brings movement, deposition, and connection, drawing distant regions into the same watershed.
As the gaze moves toward the east and south, however, the landscape begins to change.
Beyond the basin, plateaus rise and forests give way to grasslands and woodlands. Farther east, mountains, lakes, and volcanoes create a more dramatic terrain. These contrasts remind us that a country name defines a range on a map, but cannot give every place within it the same character.
The mineral image of Congo has also been shaped by extraction, trade, and global demand.
When a land is repeatedly represented through copper, cobalt, citrine, or other minerals, it becomes easy to see it primarily through resources and value. Yet minerals do not exist apart from the land. They emerge from particular rocks, fractures, and geological environments, and only later enter the human world through mining, naming, exchange, and collecting.
To read Congo, therefore, is not only to see a land rich in minerals. It is also to notice how its image has been shaped by resources, history, and the market.
Within the current DIYU Reading, Lualaba serves as the next entry into Congo.
Located within the southeastern plateau and mineral belt, Lualaba does not represent the entire country. Instead, it offers a particular place through which another Congolese landscape—and its relationship between minerals, land, and people—can gradually become visible.
To read Congo is to begin with an immense watershed, then follow its rivers, plateaus, and mineral belts toward more specific places.
May this reading allow you to see the value carried by minerals, while also seeing what existed before that value: rivers, rock, scale, and time, already shaping a world far greater than its mineral resources.
