Citrine

Citrine is the transparent to translucent yellow variety of quartz, ranging from pale lemon and golden yellow to brownish orange. It shares the same principal mineral composition as Clear Quartz and Amethyst, but yellow colour in quartz does not arise through only one mechanism. Natural Citrine may involve trace elements, structural defects, and colour centres created through natural irradiation. Some yellow-looking quartz may instead be coloured by iron-oxide inclusions such as hematite or goethite. Not every piece of yellow quartz is therefore identical to natural-colour Citrine in the strictest sense. Natural-colour Citrine is comparatively rare. Most material sold as Citrine today is produced by heating Amethyst until its purple colour changes to yellow, orange-yellow, or brownish orange. Irradiation followed by heating is another available route for modifying quartz colour, but treated yellow quartz should not all be described simply as “irradiated Citrine.” Heat-treated Amethyst remains the most widespread source. People are often drawn not only to yellow itself, but also to the way transparent light acquires warmth, allowing a previously cool crystal to feel brighter, more mature, and more open. In the DIYU Reading System, Citrine is not read through wealth, but through brightness.

Natural Reading

Citrine is composed primarily of silicon dioxide, SiO₂. It crystallises in the trigonal system, has a Mohs hardness of 7, and may occur as individual crystals, clusters, or in association with Smoky Quartz, Clear Quartz, and other minerals. Natural Citrine is often paler and more restrained than commercial imagery suggests. Its colours may include light yellow, greenish yellow, smoky yellow, golden brown, or greyish yellow, rather than an intensely uniform orange-gold. Some natural material grades gradually into Smoky Quartz, allowing yellow, brown, and smoky tones to remain within the same crystal. Transparency and colour saturation are separate qualities. A pale-yellow crystal may be highly transparent, while deeper-coloured material may also retain good clarity. Other specimens become translucent through fractures, inclusions, growth layers, or internal cloudiness. To read Citrine is to observe how natural or artificial conditions alter colour centres within quartz, allowing light to acquire yellow colour and warmth as it passes through the crystal.

Reading Impressions

Yellow repeatedly appears in sunlight, flame, ripened grain, fruit, sand, and dry cliffs. It carries both the brightness of light and the weight of earth and harvest. Citrine has therefore gradually acquired impressions of warmth, confidence, action, maturity, abundance, and hope. In modern crystal culture, it is especially associated with prosperity, career, opportunity, the solar plexus chakra, and positive energy, and is sometimes called the “merchant’s stone.” These meanings are not mineral functions of Citrine. They are collective readings created through yellow and gold, currency, sunlight, and human experiences of harvest. Different forms of Citrine also produce different impressions. Clear lemon-yellow material common in the Donghai bead market tends towards wakefulness, brightness, and lightness. The orange-gold and reddish-brown tones of heat-treated Brazilian Amethyst evoke flame, maturity, and concentrated warmth. The smoky yellow, earthy colour, and growth structures of Congo Citrine more readily suggest strata, time, weathering, and natural mineral landscapes.

Mineral Character

Those who spend time observing Citrine often discover that its character lies not in how saturated the yellow becomes, but in the way transparency remains present within colour. Clear Quartz allows light to pass directly through. Amethyst introduces distance and depth. Citrine gives that light warmth, allowing the crystal to remain open without appearing cold. Pale yellow preserves more space, creating an impression of wakefulness, lightness, and morning light. Orange-yellow and golden brown give colour greater weight, bringing it closer to afternoon sunlight, flame, and ripened fruit. The smoky tones of Congo Citrine preserve shadow within brightness. They do not remove yellow, but allow it to carry earth, weathering, and time rather than only optimism and joy. Natural colour, heat treatment, and irradiation may produce visually similar results, yet their histories of formation remain different. Reading Citrine therefore requires attention not only to the finished colour, but also to how that colour came to exist. Over time, Citrine has come to embody brightness, warmth, maturity, and unfolding.

Market Terms

“Donghai Citrine” requires careful explanation. Donghai County in Jiangsu is a major centre for crystal trading, rough-stone importation, cutting, bead manufacturing, livestream sales, and export. Its current industry chain explicitly includes imported rough material, processing, design, branding, and platform services, with substantial quantities of material arriving from Brazil, Africa, and other regions. When a product is described only as “Donghai Citrine,” the name is therefore more appropriately understood as: Citrine traded, processed, or manufactured in Donghai, rather than: natural Citrine mined from a specific deposit in Donghai. Donghai does possess substantial quartz resources, but passing through the Donghai market does not establish a specimen’s geological origin, natural-colour mechanism, or treatment history. Material sold there may include natural-colour Citrine, heat-treated Amethyst, irradiated and heated quartz, or laboratory-grown quartz. Transparency, even colour, strong saturation, and price cannot independently prove that a specimen is natural and untreated. Within DIYU documentation, Donghai is therefore best recorded as a trade, processing, or purchasing source unless reliable information about the geological origin of the rough material is also available. Brazil is one of the world’s major sources of quartz and Amethyst and also produces natural Citrine. Its most important relationship with the modern Citrine market, however, is that large quantities of Brazilian Amethyst are heated and subsequently sold as Citrine. GIA specifically identifies Brazil as a major source of Amethyst commonly transformed to Citrine colour by heat treatment. “Brazilian Citrine” does not therefore automatically mean natural, untreated Citrine. Common heat-treated Brazilian Amethyst may become vivid orange, caramel, reddish brown, or deep golden yellow. Colour may remain concentrated near crystal tips while the base is paler, and specimens may preserve the original habit of Amethyst geodes and clusters. These features may provide clues, but appearance alone cannot establish treatment history. Natural-colour Citrine does occur in Brazil, but in much smaller quantities than treated material. Pale yellow, smoky yellow, or relatively even colour may resemble some natural material, yet those features cannot independently rule out treatment. Reading Brazilian Citrine therefore requires attention to both Brazil’s extensive quartz geology and the enormous market created through heat-treated Amethyst. Natural Citrine from the Democratic Republic of the Congo is highly recognisable within the mineral specimen market. One documented locality is Luena, also spelled Lwena, in Haut-Lomami Province. Mindat records Citrine from this occurrence as a believed-valid quartz variety, with known specimens displaying pale yellow, smoky yellow, golden brown, and mixed smoky tones. Congo Citrine commonly preserves complete natural prisms and clusters. Some specimens contain a dominant central crystal surrounded by smaller crystals growing in similar directions. Others show split, candle-like, or artichoke-like growth. Their character often lies not merely in yellow colour, but in the combined landscape of yellow, smoky tones, phantoms, growth layers, and crystal structure. Names such as “Kundalini Citrine” may appear in commercial or metaphysical markets, but they are not formal mineral classifications and have no universal standard of form or quality. Congo Citrine often appears smokier, paler, and more earth-toned than heat-treated Amethyst, rather than strongly orange. Nevertheless, a Congo label cannot replace identification, and uncertain supply chains leave room for incorrect locality claims or later treatment. This is the most widespread source of commercial Citrine. When certain Amethyst is heated to several hundred degrees Celsius, its purple colour centres may change, producing yellow, orange-yellow, reddish brown, and occasionally green or colourless results. The outcome depends on locality, temperature, duration, and heating conditions. Heat treatment does not turn quartz into glass, nor is it equivalent to surface dye. The crystal remains natural quartz, but its colour has been artificially modified. The essential distinction is: Natural mineral and natural colour do not mean the same thing. Heat-treated Amethyst is natural quartz, but it should not be represented as untreated natural-colour Citrine.

DIYU Reading

DIYU does not read Citrine as a source of wealth or success. What matters is how light gradually acquires warmth as it passes through crystal. Yellow does not create abundance from nothing. Gold colour is not the same as value. Citrine became associated with harvest, opportunity, and prosperity because yellow has long appeared in sunlight, ripened fruit, grain, flame, and metal. These impressions emerge from human experience of the world, not from a promise made by the crystal. Citrine also reminds us that colour is not merely a visual result. A Donghai-processed bracelet, heat-treated Brazilian Amethyst, and a natural Congo crystal may all be placed beneath the same name, yet their histories of formation, treatment, and circulation are different. Acknowledging those differences does not weaken the reading. When natural colour, heating, irradiation, and uncertainty are described clearly, colour is finally allowed to occupy its proper place. To read Citrine is not to demand permanent brightness. It is to understand that brightness does not require the absence of shadow, nor does it mean covering every object in gold. Brightness begins when we understand where the light came from and still allow it to illuminate the structure before us.
