Explore a mineral-rich land shaped by ancient crust, rivers, and deep geological time.

導言|Introduction

剛果位於非洲大陸的中心,橫跨赤道,也占據了剛果河流域最廣大的範圍之一。

這片土地的核心,是遼闊而低平的中央盆地。密集的河流穿過森林與濕地,逐漸匯入剛果河,使水不只是地景的一部分,也成為連接不同區域的重要脈絡。

但剛果並不只是一片平坦的熱帶雨林。

從中央盆地向外移動,地勢逐漸上升。北部與南部出現高原、草原與林地,東部則進入更為崎嶇的山地、湖泊與火山地形。高度、降雨、岩層與地質活動的差異,使同一個國家之中,並存著截然不同的自然環境。

東南部的高原,又展開另一種地景。

這裡遠離中央盆地最濕潤的核心,土地更加開闊,也連接中非重要的礦帶。銅、鈷與多種礦物的形成與開採,使這片區域成為人們理解剛果礦物世界時,最常進入的方向之一。

因此,「剛果」無法只用雨林、河流或礦產概括。

它同時包含低地與高原、濕潤與乾燥、森林與裸露地表,也包含不同地質時期與形成環境留下的礦物痕跡。國家的廣大尺度,使每一個具體產區,都只能呈現其中的一部分。

Congo lies near the center of the African continent, crossing the Equator and occupying a vast part of the Congo River Basin.

At the heart of the country is an immense, low-lying central basin. Rivers pass through forests and wetlands before gradually joining the Congo River, making water not only part of the landscape, but also one of the main structures connecting distant regions.

Yet Congo is not simply a flat expanse of tropical rainforest.

Beyond the central basin, the land gradually rises. Plateaus, grasslands, and woodlands appear to the north and south, while the east becomes more rugged, shaped by mountains, lakes, and volcanic landscapes. Differences in elevation, rainfall, rock, and geological activity allow widely contrasting environments to exist within the same country.

The southeastern plateau presents another landscape.

Farther from the humid center of the basin, the land becomes more open and connects with one of Central Africa’s most significant mineral belts. Copper, cobalt, and other mineral resources have made this region one of the most familiar entry points into Congo’s mineral world.

For this reason, “Congo” cannot be contained by the image of rainforest, river, or mineral wealth alone.

It includes lowlands and plateaus, humid forests and drier open terrain, as well as mineral traces formed under different geological conditions. The scale of the country means that every specific locality can reveal only one part of a much larger world.

DR Congo lies within ancient African cratonic terrains and several major mineral belts, including the Central African Copperbelt.

Long periods of sedimentation, metamorphism, tectonic activity, and hydrothermal circulation have produced extensive copper, cobalt, and associated mineral deposits.

Compared with Mexico’s volcanic landscape, DR Congo reflects the long-term concentration and transformation of minerals within ancient crustal environments.

DIYU 閱讀|DIYU Reading

前面我們展示了剛果的風土與礦物,接下來,讓我們從晶體開始閱讀這片土地。

對底域而言,剛果呈現的是「流動」。

剛果的白水晶與黃水晶,有時也會形成近似山峰與稜線的輪廓。

主晶向上延伸,較小的晶柱從周圍聚集,使一件晶簇在有限的尺度中,展開高低錯落的空間。

但它們與高山系水晶帶來的感受並不完全相同。

高山水晶常以清楚的輪廓、明確的晶尖與較乾淨的透明度,使晶體像從空氣中被切割出來。

剛果水晶卻很少真正與形成它的環境分開。

透明與乳白彼此交錯。

淡黃色沿著晶體深淺不一地分布。

裂隙、棉絮、霧化、鐵染、黑色共生與表面的礦蝕,也常同時留在一件標本之中。

光線進入晶體後,不一定筆直穿過。

它可能在內部被打散,沿著裂隙轉折,在霧化與透明之間移動,又被包裹體與色帶重新接住。

因此,即使晶體已經形成,它看起來仍不像一個完全封閉、靜止的結果。

更像物質仍在其中緩慢變化。

這種流動,也存在於剛果與贊比亞之間的中非銅礦帶。

物質曾隨著流體穿過岩層與裂隙,在不同環境中沉澱,又受到構造、氧化與後續變化重新組織。

但在底域的閱讀中,這些地質過程不需要被逐一解釋。

重要的是,它們留下了一種可以直接被看見的狀態:

晶體不是從土地中被乾淨地取出。

土地仍然留在晶體裡。

黃褐色的鐵染像濕潤土壤留下的痕跡。

黑色礦物進入透明晶體,使原本分明的邊界變得模糊。

霧化與棉絮則像水氣尚未散去,在晶體內部保留著移動的感覺。

它們不一定符合人們對完美水晶的想像。

晶面可能受到風化。

內部可能充滿裂隙。

顏色也未必均勻。

但正因如此,剛果水晶往往具有一種很強的生命感。

它沒有將自己的形成過程全部隱藏。

反而讓變化、碰撞與滲入,繼續留在可以被觀看的位置。

在剛果的部分文化傳統中,物件的意義也經常在人、儀式與群體之間流動。

一件面具、雕像或器物,並不只屬於固定的外形,而會隨著使用、傳承與觀看,承接不同時刻的關係。

但對底域而言,剛果最直接的閱讀仍然回到晶體本身。

我們看見的不是一件已經停止變化的物質。

而是透明、顏色、共生與裂隙,仍然在同一件晶體裡彼此滲透。

收藏剛果水晶,也不一定是因為它足夠純淨或完整。

有時真正留下視線的,正是那些無法被整理乾淨的部分。

它們提醒我們:

形成並不一定有明確的終點。

穩定也不是存在唯一的方式。

一件晶體可以同時保留清楚的輪廓與尚未收束的內部。

可以已經成形,卻仍讓人感覺它正在呼吸。

剛果在底域之中,因此成為一種關於流動的閱讀。

流動不是失去形體。

而是物質在形成形體之後,仍然保留變化經過的痕跡。

晶體與土地沒有完全分開。

透明與混濁也不需要彼此排除。

它們在同一件標本之中相遇,使原本靜止的礦物,呈現出仍然活著的感覺。

願你在閱讀剛果時,不只看見晶體最後形成的輪廓,也看見那些仍在其中移動、滲入與改變的部分。

The preceding sections introduced the terroir and minerals of Congo. Now, let us begin reading this land through its crystals.

For DIYU, Congo presents itself through the idea of Flow.

Congolese clear quartz and citrine may sometimes form outlines resembling mountain peaks and ridges.

A main crystal rises above smaller points gathered around it, allowing a cluster of limited size to unfold into a landscape of changing height.

Yet the impression they create is not entirely the same as that of high-mountain quartz.

High-altitude crystals often appear through defined outlines, sharp terminations, and relatively clean transparency, as though the crystal has been cut away from the surrounding air.

Congolese quartz rarely seems completely separated from the environment in which it formed.

Transparency and milky white move through one another.

Pale yellow appears unevenly across the crystal.

Fractures, veils, clouding, iron staining, dark mineral inclusions, and etched surfaces may all remain within a single specimen.

When light enters the crystal, it does not always pass through in a straight line.

It may scatter within, turn along fractures, move between transparent and clouded areas, and be caught again by inclusions and bands of colour.

Even after the crystal has taken form, it therefore does not appear entirely closed or still.

It feels as though matter continues to change within it.

This sense of movement also belongs to the Central African Copperbelt extending between Congo and Zambia.

Mineral-bearing fluids once passed through layers of rock and fractures, depositing matter under changing conditions before later deformation, oxidation, and alteration reorganised it again.

Within DIYU, however, these geological processes do not need to be explained one by one.

What matters is the visible condition they leave behind:

the crystal has not been removed cleanly from the land.

The land remains within the crystal.

Yellow-brown iron staining resembles traces left by damp soil.

Dark minerals enter transparent quartz, softening boundaries that might otherwise appear clear.

Clouding and internal veils resemble moisture that has not yet dispersed, preserving a sense of movement within the crystal.

These specimens may not conform to conventional ideas of perfection.

Their faces may be weathered.

Their interiors may contain fractures.

Their colours may not be uniform.

Yet it is precisely through these qualities that Congolese quartz often carries such a strong sense of life.

It does not conceal every stage of its formation.

Instead, change, collision, and penetration remain where they can still be seen.

Within some Congolese cultural traditions, meaning also moves between people, rituals, and communities.

A mask, figure, or object does not belong only to a fixed outward form. Through use, inheritance, and observation, it may receive different relationships at different moments.

For DIYU, however, the most direct reading of Congo returns to the crystal itself.

What we see is not matter that has completely stopped changing.

Transparency, colour, inclusions, and fractures continue to move into one another within the same crystal.

To collect Congolese quartz is not always to choose something because it is pure or complete.

Sometimes what holds the gaze is precisely what cannot be made entirely clean or orderly.

These crystals remind us:

formation does not always have a distinct ending.

Stability is not the only way for something to exist.

A crystal may hold a defined outer form while preserving an interior that has not fully settled.

It may already be formed, yet still appear to breathe.

Within DIYU, Congo therefore becomes a reading of flow.

Flow does not mean the loss of form.

It means that even after matter has established a form, it may continue to preserve the traces of change.

Crystal and land have not been completely separated.

Transparency and opacity do not need to exclude one another.

They meet within the same specimen, allowing a seemingly still mineral to retain the feeling of something alive.

May this reading of Congo allow you to see not only the final outline of the crystal, but also everything within it that continues to move, enter, and change.
