流動|Flow

導言|Introduction

Flow is one of the clearest expressions of direction and change in nature.

Rivers extend along terrain. Lakes allow water to remain temporarily. Waterfalls descend through differences in height, while oceans receive cycles, waves, and gathering on a vast scale.

Within minerals, fractures, colour bands, needle-like inclusions, reflected crystal faces, and layered structures may create similar impressions of movement and convergence.

The mineral itself may no longer be moving.

What remains visible is often the direction and trace preserved after movement has occurred.

In the DIYU Reading System, Flow is read through:

direction, gathering, and transition.

河流|River

A river follows the terrain, sometimes moving directly and sometimes bending, dividing, and rejoining.

In minerals, elongated inclusions, filled fractures, mineral veins, and continuous colour bands may create river-like paths through crystal or matrix.

The river is read through:

movement, redirection, and connection.

Lake

A lake slows movement and gathers water within a relatively enclosed terrain.

In minerals, broad transparent zones, calm fields of colour, internal cavities, or colour enclosed by visible boundaries may create a lake-like sense of stillness.

The lake is read through:

rest, containment, and balance.

Waterfall

A waterfall forms where a clear difference in height causes water to descend rapidly.

In minerals, downward-oriented crystals, vertical colour bands, pale inclusions, and continuous reflections may create waterfall-like direction.

The waterfall is read through:

descent, release, and transition.

Ocean

The ocean is not a single directional current, but a vast body shaped by waves, depth, tides, and circulation.

In minerals, deep blue, blue-green, or grey-blue fields, broad transparency, layered light, and repeated undulating patterns may create an ocean-like scale.

The ocean is read through:

vastness, depth, and circulation.

Flow in Minerals

  • 線條與包裹體是否具有明確方向;
  • 色帶是平行、彎曲、分流或匯聚;
  • 裂隙與礦脈是否穿過晶體或母岩;
  • 光線是否隨角度移動;
  • 高低差是否形成向下或向外的延伸;

To read flow within minerals, observe:

  • whether lines and inclusions possess clear direction;
  • whether colour bands run parallel, bend, divide, or gather;
  • whether fractures and mineral veins cross crystal or matrix;
  • whether light shifts with the viewing angle;
  • whether differences in height create downward or outward movement;
  • whether transparent areas and boundaries produce containment.

Flow does not always appear as speed.

Rest, redirection, and convergence are also parts of movement.

Reading Impressions

Flow is often understood only as continuous forward movement.

Yet water may also pause, change direction, disperse, and gather again.

Rivers preserve direction.

Lakes provide rest.

Waterfalls release accumulated movement.

Oceans return many directions into a larger cycle.

Flow therefore develops into:

movement, rest, redirection, gathering, and circulation.

DIYU Reading

DIYU does not read Flow as a demand for constant change.

Movement in nature contains both progress and rest.

Rivers move around obstacles. Lakes allow water to gather. Waterfalls change speed through elevation, while oceans receive countless directions and cycles.

Stopping does not necessarily mean interruption.

Changing direction does not necessarily mean deviation.

A path may adjust to changing conditions and still become part of a larger whole.

To read Flow is not to demand endless movement.

It is to understand when to continue, when to remain, and how different directions may gather again.
